Haier Compact Refridgerator and Freezer Review

Haier Compact Refridgerator and Freezer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
-decent interior space
-looks okay
-has a freezer compartment
Cons:
-way too loud for any bedroom (wakes you up at night)
-almost always on
-tendency for freezer contents to suddenly melt at random times (even on power 4, without ever opening the fridge throughout the day)
-water spills due to aforementioned freezer melting
-turning it on for first time will fill room with fumes that cause headache and bloody-nose, and these fumes are present for about 2 days (even if you follow the instructions in manual, and keep unit turned off for 24 hours in upright position before first using it). They could get sued mightily for this, as we almost passed out from these fumes.
-runs super hot - will warm up a room like having two additional computers (about 10 degrees f.)
-makes obnoxious clicking sound when turning on/off throughout the day or night
-always makes annoying "breathing" sounds
-carton-holder in door can't fit a standard-sized carton (seriously, this is ridiculous)
-machinery in back looks like third-rate transformers that uncle Bob duct-taped together

NewAir AI-100S Portable Ice Maker In Silver With Fast 6 to 15 Minute Operating Cycle Review

We've been using the ice maker for a few weeks now, and overall it works very well. Take note of it's size (roughly 12"w x 14"d x 15" h) if you're planning on using it as a counter-top unit -- it's compact but not tiny. It is also louder than expected when the compressor cycles on (a humming / buzzing sound roughly as loud as a person talking), but thankfully this only lasts a few minutes every half-hour or so, so it's not a huge deal. It makes ice in three different sizes, and the ice is good and clear (after an initial cleaning step, see below). It works quickly, making ice within 15 minutes of turn-on and constantly replenishing the supply as it slowly melts in the ice collection bucket if you don't use the ice; as you use up the ice, you simply refill the water supply.
Two other minor negatives: first, the manufacturer uses super-adhesive blue tape to immobilize parts inside the unit during shipment. It is impossible to get rid of the sticky residue the tape leaves behind once removed, although it doesn't seem to affect the taste of the ice or anything. A less adhesive tape, such as a masking tape, would probably serve the same purpose without leaving a residue, however. Just a minor complaint. The other thing is that the unit had an extremely strong, very unpleasant smell initially. It smelled like plastic / rubber, and this smell transferred to the ice, which made using the ice disagreeable and probably inadvisable. Their support staff were helpful, however, and suggested running the machine through a couple of cycles with a mix of water and vinegar. This was a great idea and got rid of the smell almost entirely. The ice now smells and tastes perfect -- that is, it is odorless and tasteless, as ice should be!
