(More customer reviews)I bought this generator several months ago on a whim at Cost U Less in St. Croix where I live. I figure that if a Hurricane hit us it may be useful to have backup power. This proved to be one of the best purchases I ever made.
On Wednesday night into early Thursday we got hit with Hurricane Omar, a Category 3 storm. After the storm we had no power. My basement apartment that is occupied by a tenant was flooded. I fired up this little 2 stroke generator and plugged my wet vac into it. It worked great, it could handle the load the 3HP wet vac put on it (this is only a 2HP generator, we gained an entire horse :)). Within an hour and a half her apartment was cleaned up pretty good.
That night we still had no power. I was able to power up my 47" LCD TV, Satellite Box, DSL modem, and Linksys router off of it. I got about 6 hours with this load on 1 gallon of oil/fuel mixture....not bad. The next night we still had no power so my wife added her laptop to this load and got about 5 hours on a gallon of fuel.
Now it would not power my refrigerator or my water pumps from the Cistern which was a bit disappointing. The startup load of the fridge was just too great. Also, like all 2 stroke motor's, starting it can be a pain...when you let gas sit in it for a while the mixture gets a little oil heavy...adding a small amount of gas and "shaking" it seems to get it started again. You will have to yank the cord a few times which is challenging for my wife. It also is loud (as all 2 stroke motor's tend to be).
For the $130 I paid for this I got my money's worth. Just being able to get online and watch my Satellite TV after the storm made life post-Omar much easier. I am very glad I bought this product. It's not a solution to all your power problems but in a pinch such as the one I was in it has worked out great.

I was worried the voltage would be all over the place. I placed a 2400 watt load using a Mega Beast on this and it varied by 1 volt! Nominal 120 volts. I was very happy. This will work in an emergency to keep the heat on and the beer cold as long the total watts is not exceeded. Recommended!

(More customer reviews)Bought this recently from Amazon for $180.00 I will say its worth about that. I tried a few high wattage things in it like a hair dryer, Iron, coffee maker, just to see how long I could use it. These are things I could never think of using in a standard 1500VA UPS, (Which I have for comp and such) All of the devices ran well, the hair dryer probably sucked it down the fastest, (Set high 1500watts), lasted aout 7 minutes before the warning started going off. The unit ran about 5 more minutes on medium setting before the battery dropped to 20 percent. The battery did recover to 50% after turning off dryer, so high wattage appliances I think are a bit much for the batteries to output continuously.
The unit is heavy, about 60 pounds. For the money, I would buy again. I figure I should get about 6 hours on a computer with a flat panel attached. For most short power outages, this will get you by for a few necessities. Anything longer you will have to go generator.
The description reads as though you can use it for a fridge and other high wattage appliances, which I guess is true, but misleading as I would imagine a fridge would kill it in about 10 minutes or less.
All in all glad, I was able to purchase for the $180.00. If nothing else you can dry your hair when the power is out, and make coffee, without having to hook up the generator

Xantrex 802-1500 XPower 1,500 Watt Portable Powerpack Review

(More customer reviews)I needed a powerful but sealed power-pack (sealed battery + converter) for poolside use, to power a large 110-volt karaoke machine for five hours a day. The Xatrex 1500 is the only power-pack I've found that meets this requirement.
It was a pleasant surprise to find that the wheels have rubber rather than (noisy) plastic treads.
The first 1500 stopped working with a bang after two hours. When I phoned the Xantrex company, the technician I soon was talking to quickly concluded that my 1500 had malfunctioned and recommended that I return it. I was pleased with this candor. The second 1500 has worked for about a month now.
Not obvious is that the 1500 has a small storage cabinet, in which I store an extension cord.
Both 1500s arrived undamaged. A disclaimer is that I bought my 1500s from costo-dot-comm, which is relevant because perhaps Costco uses different packaging for shipping.
The "large karaoke machine" is a MegaStar CM-K1100, and its average draw has been 30-something watts.
9/18/06 Update: Around July the charge time dropped to under four hours. When I called Xantrex, the technician told me that battery life is about 200 charges.

Maytag Black Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Review

It has about the same space as our older replaced Jennaire Side by Side 33 inch width one. Maytag : MFI2269VEQ 33in Bottom Freezer Freestanding Refrigerator Bisque
To fit this new one in we had to shorten the height of a cabinet above it but expected to do it for most newer refrigerators. Also it being deeper than our side by side we decided to reduce the back free-standing wall and got an extra 3.5 inches, which was most welcome. So it barely stands out no more than an inch than our side by side one.
In general it has worked very well for the week or so we have had it.
It produces enough ice for a family of three. We like two gallons of milk can fit on the door and easier access for our child to get snacks. It seems very well lit considering our Jennaire was a very well lit model also. I think it will do even better as it has more glass to let light through. It is one of the most energy efficient models in the French Door style we could buy even with the Ice in the Door front dispensor.
We got it from a Big Box store for a fair price that included free delivery and removal of the older one. They also offered a 10% Energy Rebate that helped the price for us even more! (considering we had to do some minor remodeling to get it to fit into the wall better).
The only real complaint is we wished it had an option for an Egg Tray that would fit into the Door's Dairy area! We may make our own one by cutting a nice one we have been using! Or just put 6 eggs in a large silicon ice tray since it is not yet offered. CS replied few of Maytags new refrigerators offer/include an Egg Tray.
It balanced fairly easily unlike our previous model. So over all we like it but do have to adjust to the ice in door taking up room in the top tray area but do fit a few items underneath it. Our last model did not and probably could not have the Ice in the Door so now we do have that option and like it at our currently 33 inch width.
I would not hesitate to buy it again.
