When my old coppertone refrigerator died after 45 years, I had no idea what would be a wise choice on the market today. I moved everything to the garage refrigerator and started the hunt. After days of internet search and driving to most every store in the area, this is the refrigerator I gained the most faith in.
I had listed my priorities:
1. BOTTOM FREEZER! -- SWING DOOR! -- NOT pull! -- Would like some storage on the door. Pull out basket for easy reach. Ice maker, and a light in the freezer. (My coppertone was bottom freezer, swing door, with 2 shelves on the door, I loved it!)
2. WHATEVER BRAND that had the BEST REVIEWS.
3. BUY FROM a company that had a reputation of standing behind their product. NOT JUST the manufacturer, but also the place of purchase. The quality and lenght of their extended warranty.
4. The COLOR I wanted was sacerficed, because cream with bottom freezer is only to be found in TWO refrigerators on the planet! (A)- Sears, and NOT the Elite line, so for me that was NOT an option. On Sears own web sight it had only three reviews, and they were LESS then VERY POOR. I looked at the display model at Sears and knew I'd rather change my color preference than buy that one. Cheap looking plastic handles, etc. (B)- G.E., a lower line that had less cu. ft. and ALL BAD reviews.
Most of a week was spent on the internet, with extensive notes.
Then I went from store to store for over a week, looking at ALL the display models, the salesmen checked there store catalogs, I opened all the doors and drawers everywhere I went. To me a BOTTOM FREEZER -- with a SWING DOOR, NOT a drawer, is the ONLY convenient, accommodating style out there, and there getting hard to find. The pull out drawers are back breaking with no extra conveniences to make it worth the hardship. There are other stainless steel models, in more expensive brands, BUT those companys only make this style in a smaller size. Usually a total of 16 to 19 cu.ft. Not near enough room.
I had read all 72 reviews at the aj madison sight. This model stood out with a 4.4 star average.
So this L.G. brand, LBC22520ST 22.4 cu.ft. is what I bought eariler this year, the label inside the frige says, 'Made in Mexico 2011'. (USED to be made in Soul, Korea) For now, I have only good things to say about this model of refrigerator-freezer.
The refrigerator - freezer is Enery Star rated and has:
1. Dual digital temperature controls on the ceiling of the frige, that goes from 1-7. 7 being the coldest. The recommendation for top and bottom is #4. Depending on how frequently the door is opened. Using a refrigerator thermometer, my frige came in at: #4 the frige cools to 34, at #5 it cools to 30 degrees. At #4 the freezer cools to 2 above 0, at #5 cools to -2. (At #5 it was VERY difficult to scoop the ice cream, #4 is perfect, VERY firm yet better for scooping) There also is an 'ice plus' buttom to get ice quicker.
The owner's manual states the unit will cool:
Refigerator: 32 to 47.
Freezer: - 6 to 9
TEMPERATURE GUIDELINES:
40 - 80 Warm.
32 - 40 Refrigerating.
0 - 32 Freezing.
-20 - 0 O.K.Freeze
2. FRIGE -- 15 1/2 cu. ft. has two bright 40 w bulbs, perfect lighting. Three large bins. Split tempered glass shelves that can be rearranged. (they don't pull out) The door has 6 large capacity shelves, the bottom one is stationary the other 5 can be rearranged. The shelves can hold several gallon size products. Overall, the door holds a VERY impressive amount.
3. FREEZER -- 6.9 cu.ft. has one 40 w bulb. Ice maker, has a switch there, if you want to turn it off. A large bin holds the ice. When the ice maker pours the ice in the plastic bin it is quite noisey, but if you line the bin with a rubber mat it is MUCH better. Or if you have enough ice in the bin, it can be turned off at that location. The shelf DOES pull out. The large basket on the bottom slides on side rails, and also pulls out. There's one shelf on the door, the LENGHT of the door, NOT just a small pocket like the G.E.
4. An alarm system with a soft 42 db, starts beeping when the door has been open for one minute. It beeps 3 x at the first minute, and then 3x every 30 seconds, and it doesn't cancell until the door is properly shut.
If the door is left open over 6 and 1/2 minutes, the interior lights automatically shut off.
If you close the door and open it, the lights are back on, they'll go off again in another 6 and 1/2 minutes.
I'm not crazy about these two enery saving features, but they aren't as bad as you'd think. These features are some of the ways the industry is using to qualify for enery star quality. This is an very quite running refrigerator. The motor is a gentle quite sound.
ST stands for stainless steel, the doors and the handles are, and magnets won't stick to them. The top and the sides are textured metal, painted medium gray, magnets will stick there. This model can be ordered with the door handle on either the left OR right side. Available in - black - white - stainless steel. Weight is 235.lbs.
The manufactures warranty is one year parts and labor, but 7 years on the sealed system.
I purchased my refrigerator from a Home Depot Hardware store, in Indiana.
They will compare price from internet, or advertisements if you take them a copy.
They have free delivery. The extended extra 4 year warranty was $99.00. for a total of five years.
Home Depot dosen't do their deliveries themselves. For my frige they used a local professional delivery service. The frige had to come across aprox 60 feet of my yard that was soft and wet the day of delevery. To make room to get the frige through the door, it was necessary to pull the pins out of the hinge, move the door out of the way, and take the doors off the refrigerator, Then with 'booties' on their feet, and on the wheels of the dolly, they brought the unit in, put it back together, and hooked it up with great care, no dirt, and zero problems. Then put the door back on my house, loaded up the box they had just took the unit out of. It was a relief to witness the men taking their time to be careful with every aspect of the delivery.
Footnote: I did not experience a 'residue' left on the outside of the unit from the plastic film used for shipping as I've seen others mention. Nor do I aquire many 'finger' prints on the stainless steel. But my daughter has had those issues on various stainless steel products over the years, 3 children, stove boil-overs etc. After trying numerous products she likes the natural, non-toxic product, 'Method' much better than any other. It cleans and polishs, and you can also buy the appropriate microfiber cloth to match the cleaner you need. I found this product at Target, and Lowes Hardware. They must have been sold out of the cloth by Method both places. However, I found a nice variety pack of 4 at Lowes by a company named 'Neat Home', they're the same idea as the Method brand.
Her suggestion is a good one. This very easy to use product works wonderful!
