Danby DCR34W Compact Refrigerator Review

Danby DCR34W Compact Refrigerator

i choose this refrigerator for two reasons: 1. instead of the usual 20+ inch footprint, this model was well enough under to fit perfectly in a space where i wanted it, and 2. i had a danby two zone wine cooler that has worked well for over ten years. i'm especially happy with the quality of the danby products as compared to other small refrigerators i've owned. it's quiet and well designed for what it's meant to do. i removed the drip pan, egg tray, and the ice cube tray to make more room. when it comes time to defrost, i'll replace the drip pan. this thing holds at least three cases of soda or beer plus other stuff that can be squeezed in. like most small units, there's no light; but when i reach in i pretty much know what i'll find.

This is the fridge from hell. I own this fridge and while it COULD be a great appliance it leaks glue from every plug and opening on the doors and unit. I am constantly having to scrape up puddles of caulking or glue from the floor and off of the doors. I've taped the holes, requested new plugs etc. from Frigidaire and have NEVER received a response from them via mail, email, or phone in response to my requests for new plugs or help in curbing the leaking caulk/glue issue. I purchased it from Lowes and Lowes hasn't been any help either since I didn't buy a warranty - assuming that Frigidaire was a "good" brand. Not.
It's noisy as well - louder than a full-size refrigerator. The plastic shell will not stand up to dorm room, kids or heavy use. I have it in my office and after less than a year it's looking brittle.
I think the leaks from both sides of the bottom of the freezer door, and the fridge door could be a health hazard if they got into your food. As it is the caulk just sticks to everything making the handles, the floor, the sides - everything sticky. It gets on your hands, your clothes, your shoes. You'll spend more time cleaning the glue up than you will stocking and using the appliance. There were plugs MISSING when I got the unit - something I noticed the first time I opened the door and found glue all over everything. I called the company to ask them to send plugs and they never responded. I couldn't find the plugs online either. I put heavy duty packing tape over the holes - which didn't work - the glue oozes out the sides like some sort of putty colored, B-grade movie alien invader.
The freezer works great - so great it freezes any food on the inside refrigerator shelves even on the highest cool setting. If you don't get great air circulation food will spot freeze on any shelf. Food on the door - such as milk or perishables, goes bad fast. Better to put it in leak proof containers and lay it on its side on a shelf where all the really cold air is. Of course the problem might be all the insulation is leaking onto the floor....I'm waiting for it to disintegrate one day once the putty/glue/insulation has leaked out.
Spend your money on a full-size or other brand. I would NEVER EVER recommend this appliance to anyone and would tell consumers to steer clear of the Frigidaire brand entirely. I just cleaned up another puddle of refrigerator poop and have decided to VIDEO TAPE the oozy mess next time and post it here...and on YouTube and anywhere else I can think of so I can help save the world from incontinent refrigerators. Unless you like changing diapers, scraping glue and having your fingers stick together every time you open a fridge door - steer clear - steer VERY clear of this appliance!!!

Haier HSB03BB Compact 2-2/3-Cubic-Foot Refrigerator/Freezer, Black Review

Haier HSB03BB Compact 2-2/3-Cubic-Foot Refrigerator/Freezer, Black

This seems to be an attractive and useful fridge, but it arrived in the worst possible packing imaginable for something like this: there was *no* space between the box and the fridge inside, and no packing materials to cushion against shipping damage. In other words, any blows to the box are blows to the fridge. As you can imagine shipping something of this size, some rough handling is guaranteed.
Ours arrived with two really huge dents. Luckily the dents do not impact operation so we probably won't mess with the hassle of a return. But be aware that getting a unit shipped to you in perfect condition seems really unlikely with this brain-dead packing.

With its 2-2/3-cubic-foot capacity, this compact refrigerator/freezer keeps food fresh and beverages ice cold. It works great in an office or dorm room, or as a back-up fridge around the holidays when extra space comes in handy. The unit provides two full-width slide-out wire shelves, two full-width door-storage shelves, 2-liter bottle storage, and a half-width freezer compartment with an ice-cube tray. The unit's adjustable thermostat can be controlled by the rotary temperature-control dial, while its manual-defrost function helps save on energy costs. Thoughtfully designed, the appliance features a recessed door handle, making the unit flat and space saving in the front, and a coil back that works as a condensor to release heat trapped inside the refrigerator. It also provides a quick-cleaning drip tray and two front leveling legs that can be made longer or shorter to balance the unit if it sits on uneven ground. The refrigerator/freezer measures 19-1/8 by 18-3/4 by 26-1/8 inches and carries a one-year parts-and-labor warranty with a five-year warranty on the compressor.

Emerson Compact Refrigerator - 4.6 cu. ft. Review

Emerson Compact Refrigerator - 4.6 cu. ft.
Average Reviews:

I bought this fridge for school to have in my dorm room, and I am consistently amazed at what I can fit in there and how cold it keeps the food. My friends have other fridges and none of them are as big or as good at cooling drinks and other items. It has two shelves a drawer in the door you have a pop can dispenser and then a few rimed shelve spaces. On a side note I use the top of the fridge as a table top to put my cups and bowls and such it works quite well. I have had this fridge for about nine and months and have only been pleased with it, it doesn't frost up like my old one and it stays clean and looks nice. For the price on here you can't find a better one. I looked long and hard before buying this. I ended up getting it on clearance at target for ninety instead of one hundred and fifty, but still the fridge at 150 beats the heck out of its competition. My neighbor liked my fridge so much he ended up buying this one as well.

Emerson Compact Refrigerator Review

Emerson Compact Refrigerator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm usually overall elaborate with my reviews, but I'll be brief on this particular one since more than likely if you're reading this, you're probably buying this fridge on clearance or it's coming to its end of life cycle.
First the positive aspects of the fridge. Emerson has accomplished what many could not successfully do with other brand models, in that you have a fully functional TRUE freezer space inside a compact fridge. It's amazingly large and can actually fit regular tubs of half gallon ice cream. (The horizontal cartons anyway. Vertical cartons can be laid down on their sides) It can keep things in a solid block of ice if needed, and due to the low volume space of the freezer, it acts as a better ice cube maker.
The fridge has a TRUE FLAT back. No wires are exposed, you can literally sit it against the wall. The trick is that Emerson ran the cooling coil around the fridge, so that the heat sink is actually on its sides and bottom. They then covered it with thin plastic on all sides. The fridge is warm to the touch, but never hot because of this.
With positives come negatives of course. The fridge itself would be comparable to 3.9cu Ft models, but because of the enclosed freezer door, it is cut down to total 3.1cu Ft. (2.2cu Ft for space, 0.9 for freezer)
The fridge is HEAVY. It's 57.5lbs is not entirely accurate. Although I don't have an exact measurement, it definitely is a lot heavier than similar compact fridge models. Typically other models would be around 45lbs.
The refrigerator space is surprisingly weak compared to the very powerful freezer space. I'm assuming the motor that it uses is the same one on other fridges, so they implemented more research onto keeping the freezer cold, but not the fridge as cold. If you're a person who likes ICE cold drinks, you'll be in for some disappointment.
Neutral things that you can see positive or negative are follows.
It runs quiet, but runs constantly. The freezer needs to be kept in check and because it uses such a small motor, it has to keep running.
It has key locks. This can be useful if you want to keep alcohol in the fridge, but if you LOOSE your keys. Well, good luck.
Its unusual weight is placed onto four peg legs. If you have sensitive flooring, this can cause dents.
In the end, I like the fridge but don't love the fridge. It's definitely pretty, quiet, and has good freezer space. It's also heavy, runs constantly, and has limited fridge space for its size. This is a true MINI FRIDGE. Take that for what it is.
UPDATE: June 13 2010
----------------------------------------------------------------
Although I reviewed this fridge back in November 2008, I actually had the fridge in May. Now is past the 2 year point and I'm happy to say the fridge is still going strong. I decided to update the review since I saw how many people found this helpful and I wanted to make sure my words didn't loose meaning over time.
First of all - this fridge is available in retail chains. So for those of you who are getting bad shipments, I suggest you simply go pick it up. It's a shipping issue between you and the vendor; not Emerson and their fridge.
Second - Always remember that this fridge's big selling point is the freezer space. The fridge space isn't any different from other mini-fridges you happen to come across.
For those of you who have actually e-mailed me about the "flat back" - yes, this fridge literally has a flat back. The cooling coil you find on most fridges (take a look behind your big one in your kitchen for example) was covered up by Emerson on this model, so it runs around the fridge but is covered by that black thick plastic material you see in the picture. It's really sleek, and very useful for those who want to shove the fridge in a corner with it's back facing outward. KEEP IN MIND for safety reasons, you should still give the fridge some breathing room around the edges.
Still a great fridge, still love mine. I would gladly pick up another one if I actually needed another one. This little guy isn't an Energy Star fridge, but almost no mini-fridge is unless it's those horrible coolers they pass off as fridges now-a-days. Thanks for reading as always.

Is a good value for a compact refrigerator. Runs quiet. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is its energy efficiency rating. Product also arrived with the bottom frame having been bent in shipping, but we were able to bend it back well enough and is not the product's fault.
