FCA2-05 FAILED CIRCUIT POWER ALARM Review

FCA2-05 FAILED CIRCUIT POWER ALARM

I bought this device to be warned if I lost power to my refrigerator and it works perfect. My refrigerator is plugged in to a GFI outlet that on more than one occasion has had the test button bumped in to resulting in no power to my refrigerator. This small device was "cheap insurance" in lieu of replacing an entire refrigerator worth of food.
It was very simple to set up...I dropped a battery in, plugged it in, and then plugged my refrigerator in the piggy-back style plug and all was ready to work. For my installation I used a little Velcro on the back and hid it on the side of fridge where nobody can see anyway.
One problem I did experience is that it immediately went in to "alarm mode" - even though the unit had power!
I quick look inside the revealed a disconnected terminal to the relay (not a big deal for me, but to someone less technical it would have meant a return to the manufacturer). I made the connection and it now works as expected. I guess I got "that one" made on a Friday at 4:59PM LOL!
However this mishap did afford me the opportunity to look closer at the internals of the product and from a technical standpoint it is very well constructed and above average in quality. Overall build is "commercial grade" (or close to it).
The alarm is quite loud and would be great for a second fridge or freezer tucked in the basement or garage etc.
I have tested it a few times and the unit continues to be ready to alert me should my refrigerator lose power again. A brief power outage also confirmed it remains ready to do it's job.
Overall - quite satisfied! 4 stars only because of the little connection issue. If you have something that should always have power and need to know when it doesn't this is the right product for the job.

I also was duped by the advertising for the freezer alarm. Nowhere in the description does it mention that the alarm ONLY works with specific Kenmore freezers. That fact should be prominently displayed!

CDN Audio Visual Freezer Alarm Review

Auto-defrost refrigerators/freezers cycle their temperature between 0 degrees F and above 25 degrees F. Unfortunately, this alarm doesn't accomodate the cycle resulting in false alarms. The owners manual offers a cop-out solution, "wrap the sensor in foam". OK -- so how does one calibrate the sensor and know that it is set properly? It would take a lot of trial an error, adding foam, removing foam . . . who has time for that? It needs a switch where the consumer can pick the alarm temperature.

Refrigerator/Freezer Thermometer w/Alarm (-50°c-70°C) () Review

Refrigerator/Freezer Thermometer w/Alarm (-50°c-70°C) ()

Got one of these a few years back as we had a couple of experiences with the basement refrigerator door left ajar and later failure (no alarm feature). Have been very happy with it, except that the alarm is not very loud. Seems to be a common comment on other alarm thermometers.
One feature that pulls me to this particular model (besides matching the one I already have) is the "buffered" probe. The bottle of glycol averages the temperature measurements a bit so that short durations with the door open don't cause a spike and alarm.
The probe wire is small enough to not cause a problem of air/humidity leakage through magnetic door seals.
By the way, the description may not be clear: the alarm can be disabled via a slide switch on the back.
It is somewhat unfortunate that this is not offered as a dual fridge/freezer meter.
Am adding 3 of these to my wish list for upcoming birthday for additional fridge/freezers.
At the time of this review, I see the same thermometer on Amazon with 2 different brand names (VWR, Fisher Scientific) for sale by 3rd parties only. So the brand and sellers may change over time. If so, look for the probe in the green bottle and the "Traceable" label above the LCD display. Price is around $50.

I've had this installed for about 1 month. Both transmitters and receiver are working well. The freezer chest transmitter is located on the basememt floor about 10' (below)from the receiver on the main floor and the 2nd transmitter is in my frige on the same floor (2nd) within 15'. All working OK. So far, I can recomend this product.

CDN Audio Visual Refrigerator Freezer Alarm Review

The thermometer and probe seem to be well made but it didn't work very well with my upright freezer. As others mentioned, the alarm is not loud enough unless you're fairly close to the unit but the biggest problem is the probe wire. It is round, about 2 mm in diameter and my freezer door will not seal tightly around it. Within 2 days, my manual defrost freezer had a block of ice forming where the wire came through the seal due to humid air leakage. I've seen other units that use thinner flat wire which I suspect would work better.

Chaney Instrument 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer Alarm Set Review

Chaney Instrument 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer Alarm Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this alarm because we have young kids who love to be independent and help out by getting their own ice and food. Since our indoor freezer is a bottom pull-out, they can get into it easily. We also have an upright freezer in the garage. We had one week where a freezer was left open three times. This alarm has helped tremendously.
We are using both sensors in the two freezers. They come pre-programmed with min/max settings, one for the refrigerator and one for the freezer. It is very simple to change those settings though and the directions were clear.
I really like that it has a fifteen-minute delay before the alarm sounds. That is, the temperature has to be above the set point for 15 minutes before the alarm is triggered. That feature prevents false alarms when a 3-year old is having trouble deciding which ice cube is the perfect one for his juice.
I wish I had known that for freezer use you need to use lithium batteries (AA) as they work at lower temperatures versus alkaline. We didn't have any on hand and so had to wait to install the units. Extra trips to the store are a pain and I would have just ordered 4 (2 for ea) when I bought the unit if I had known.
