Sanyo HF-5017 5-Cubic-Foot Upright Freezer, White Review

I've had this unit running for about two weeks and haven't had any problems with it.
You can defiantly hear it run, unlike my full size Frig/Freezer. I wouldn't say it's overly loud or anything just something I've noticed.
Also the door swings the opposite way than I think it should but that is just my opinion.
The manual specifically says that this unit is not for placing under a counter or in any sort of enclosure.
The middle temp setting cools to 0F so that is good.
The compressor hangs out of the back bottom of the unit about an inch so the smooth back statement is somewhat misleading.
In all I'd buy another one if this one doesn't break....
Energy Star Label reads 321kWh's a year or $34. Similar models graph shows a range between $29 and $35, (Label is based on 2007 data)

Frigidaire : FFU12F2HW 28 12.1 cu. ft. Upright Freezer Review

I was actually looking for a smaller freezer to take the overload from my fridge freezer, but for the price difference, this somewhat larger freezer (12.1 Cubic Feet), which is frost-free and has an interior light was a much better deal. I remember my mother defrosting her freezer years ago and really didn't want to have to do that. It's a huge hassle. But neither did I need a big fancy freezer and my space is limited. This freezer really fits my needs. It is not too big (outside measurements: 5' H, 28" W, 26" deep)and not too heavy so it can sit on the little platform in the garage outside my mudroom door. We got it up the stairs on a hand truck with no problem. It's handy for me there and doesn't seem to mind the heat in the garage. It's well insulated.
I am using an appliance quality extension cord to the nearest outlet, which is working fine. We adjusted the front leveler legs up slightly per directions so the door swings shut by itself, which is nice if my hands are full. The door provides a secure seal. It has a pocket grasp handhold for opening rather than a latch. The door can not be reversed to open on the other side.
There are no baskets supplied with the freezer and I wanted those so have ordered some small freezer baskets Chrome Basket (Chrome) (8"H x 11.75"W x 12.75"D) for the shelves to contain my produce sealed in plastic using my FoodSaver. These baskets are a shade too wide to fit two abreast on the shelves, but I got one for each shelf and am using the other half of the shelf for things I can stack and larger items. The shelves, by the way, are non-adjustable, but well spaced.
I knew I wanted an upright freezer, but the extra space offers the unexpected bonus of allowing me to freeze homemade juice pops for the grandchildren (which need to be upright and level until frozen) and gives me room for a cookie sheet holding strawberries to be frozen separately before bagging and other unusual options my fridge freezer never really did (it is always too full).
I haven't seen an electric bill yet to assess the impact and I know it will be more than a manual defrost freezer, but I'm so delighted with this unit, I'm willing to pay a little extra. The energy guide that came with the freezer estimates $62/yr. That seems low, but we'll see. All in all this was a great purchase and highly recommended.
Update 12/14/09
I've now received three electric bills and am even further pleased that there is very little impact from running this freezer. I'd now guess I'll being paying about $50/yr to run the freezer. Another neat thing is that when a bad storm tripped the reset outlet where the freezer is plugged in and I didn't know it for two days, the temp never rose above 21 degrees in the freezer and everything remained well preserved even with no power. When I went to put something in the freezer and saw the light was off, I knew right away what had happened. Another reason to have the interior light, because when the freezer is between cooling cycles, it's completely silent so the light is what tells you it's 'on'. I have a gauge clipped to the outside of the freezer with a probe that attaches inside and lets me see what the temperature is. It maintains a much more consistent temperature than my fridge freezer does.

Frigidaire : FCFS201LFB Refrigerator Review

Possibly Frigidaire has remedied the issue by now, but ours would build up ice in the defrost drain tray and eventually require a manual defrost. The solution was cheap and simple, insulate the metal shield which covers the defrost drain area to allow the defrost heater to work properly. I used some foil bubble material expressly for this purpose, and affixed it to both sides of the shield. Unfortunately, Frigidaire tech support did not have a clue, and suggested to move the defrost drain "trap" closer to where it exits on the rear. This was NOT an effective fix! Otherwise a great heavy-duty appliance with no fancy computer-board driven controls to go bad. Also be aware this is designed for a commercial setting, i.e. not all that silent as the typical domestic home refrigerator or freezer. BTW, the Amazon description is incorrect, this is a freezer, not a refrigerator.

With a 14-4/5-cubic-foot capacity, this manual-defrost chest freezer provides additional storage space for extra groceries. The unit comes equipped with adjustable temperature control, an interior light, a power-on light, and a top-lifting door with a built-in handle for ease of use. Its lock-and-key system keeps the freezer door shut and securely locked, plus the key automatically ejects to prevent being left in the lock. Accessories include two StorMor lift-out baskets, which offer convenient storage for easy access to most small frozen items or frequently used items. A food organization system also comes included, consisting of heavy-duty dividers with pre-printed storage labels. When 1/4- to 1/2-inch of frost has accumulated on the inside of the unit, remove all frozen-food items and defrost and clean the freezer. A defrost drain at the base of the unit makes it simple to drain the water. After defrosting, wash inside surfaces with warm water and baking soda. Removable parts and the cabinet exterior can be cleaned with warm water and mild liquid detergent. Rinse and wipe all surfaces dry with a clean soft cloth. The chest freezer measures 29-1/2 by 48 by 35 inches (60-13/16 inches with the lid open) and carries a one-year warranty.

Frigidaire FFC0522DW 5-Cubic-Foot Manual-Defrost Chest Freezer, White
Beautifully quiet operation, thank goodness cause we had no room in our tiny kitchen so we had to put it in a corner of the dining room. We live in an apartment and the landlord doesn't allow for us to buy our own refrigerator, but we needed the extra freezer space for meat, ice and vegetables. This is perfect, quiet and not bad looking. Its easy to move so that we can clean the floors. Great product, I'd recommend it.

My first freezer arrived with dents to all edges, the control panel was dangling out the front, and coolant had leaked all over the side of the box. I contacted Amazon, they provided an immediate response and my replacement arrived a few days later in perfect condition. The product gets an A, shipping gets a B, Amazon gets a resounding A+!
