Onion Keeper (Colors May Vary) Review

Onion Keeper (Colors May Vary)

The way it works, you can see in the photo the swirls at the bottom of half of the onion saver. This collects the moisture so that the onion (partially sliced of course) stays fresh. I have tried these "savers" for tomatoes and lemons as well, and they always seem to work very well. And they're quite attractive.
I do find that they do best on about the second shelf of the refrigerator, and putting them in the crisper is not so good. They just don't need it.
One reviewer complained about the odor. I find that, yes, if I put the saver up close and smell it, I can smell an onion odor. But I don't find it so strong that it permeates my refrigerator or sniff a noticeable odor when I open the fridge door.
They also clean well in the top portion of the dishwasher.
I'm very satisfied. It means no more wilted, tanned onion only meant for the trash bin after being refrigerated only a few days. And as I love onions, this is a real boon for my kitchen.

Amana : AFI2538AEB 24.9 Cu. Ft. Refrigerator - Black Review

Amana : AFI2538AEB 24.9 Cu. Ft. Refrigerator - Black

Our Amana Side-by-Side stopped cooling late in the afternoon the day before Thanksgiving. We bought ice and stuffed the fridge, then rushed to shop before the stores closed. This is not the way I like to shop. I like to do research first. But because we must keep Insulin chilled but not frozen we didn't have the luxury of research time and Internet shopping.
I knew I wanted this style because I love bottom freezers, it is easy to see items in the back, and it is energy efficient.
None of the stores we were able to get to before closing time carried this model. I found that most brands had freezer drawers that were extremely difficult to open. Some I couldn't open at all.
I was worried about buying American because I knew Whirlpool had bought the companies and we once had a Whirlpool that was nothing but trouble. Our son bought a bottom-freezer Amana after the company had been purchased by Whirlpool. He said he was pleased with it, had had no problems, and was told when he bought it that Amana still makes the machine; Whirlpool only makes the visible exterior.
I have recommended Amana to family and friends so the only question was could I open the drawer? Yes! The floor model was tight; the one on my new fridge is easier to open even when fully loaded. The freezer has 2 upper drawers for easy access to the foods you use most frequently. They slide.
The big surprise was inside the refrigerator section. The left side has 6 special holders for soda or beer cans. This saves a lot of shelf space. The right door has a special place for 2 gallons of milk. Shelves are adjustable. There are 2 crisper drawers and a deli drawer. To use the deli drawer you have to open both doors. The lights are bright. The water filter is up front so it's easy to replace. It's large so it should last quite a while. The fridge will tell you when the filter needs to be replaced. There's an alarm to warn you the doors aren't closed. It went off as we were loading the fridge. It's loud enough to hear across the room but it doesn't blast you out of the house.
This model provides ice and water through the door. You can select water only, cubes only, or both together. The temperature control is also on the outside. There is a child lock to prevent children and large dogs from playing with the water dispenser. (Yes, dogs sometimes press their noses to it. We have a friend who has a curious Great Dane.)
This refrigerator is quiet! Amana is not known for quiet refrigerators, only good ones. Insulation is great. It hardly runs but maintains temperature perfectly.
What you will miss are an egg container and a large ice container. I miss the crushed ice my previous Amana had. And I believe a side-by-side freezer holds more than this drawer. Both my Amanas are 25 cubic feet total but I don't know the freezer measurements.
The exterior does not show fingerprints!

LG LFC25776ST 36 25.0 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator - Stainless Steel Review

This is our second LG fridge. The first was purchased in 2007. We started having problems right away...seemed like the repair person was here every 6 months. Finally, the last problem was insurmountable and after 2 weeks of "camping" with ice chests, LG at long last replaced the fridge with this model. We were thrilled and the fridge arrived 4-18-2011. On June 1st, it just died. Turned out to be a defective main circuit board. Part ordered. Next day, we were informed that the part was out of stock, not in for 4 weeks. Hmmm, part out of stock....what does that tell you? An all too common problem? It has now been 7 days and we are waiting to see what LG will do for us. They do not plan to reimburse us for all the ice we've purchased or for some of the food that has gone bad. Totally unacceptable time to keep a customer in limbo. Buyer beware!

LG LFX28978ST LFX28978ST French Door Refrigerator Review

LG LFX28978ST LFX28978ST French Door Refrigerator
Average Reviews:

This comment is about LG's poor customer service and the unprofessional attitude of their management. We recently purchased a new LG stainless steel french door refrigerator, model LFX28978ST. We found our best deal at Home Depot and they delivered it promptly. It came well packed with blue plastic covering all of the stainless surfaces for protection. We inspected the unit to make sure it was in good shape, but left the plastic in place. We had to complete installing our new kitchen floor before installing our new LG, so we had the delivery folks set the unit out of the traffic pattern where it remained untouched for 9 days.
Once the flooring was finished, we installed the refrigerator into a custom cabinet where it fit perfectly. Once in place and connected to water and power, we removed the plastic on the doors as it cooled down so we could start putting things into it. It was after removing the plastic that we noticed a slight but very sharp diagonal dent about 8 inches long on the lower freezer drawer. Since we watched the unpacking and moving of the unit into our home the week before, this dent clearly occurred at the factory. We immediately called Home Depot, and they asked that we call LG since the unit is new.
We called LG, and to make a long story short, they said they would not do anything. Their position was that we have only 7 days (this was day 9) to report any damage. There is nothing on any paperwork that says this, but they said that this is their policy. We asked to speak with a manager, who said the same thing and added "let the buyer beware." This conversation lasted probably 15 minutes, but to no avail.
We then contacted Home Depot again, and they said they would take care of it for us. Home Depot is great! In fact, they were willing to replace the entire refrigerator. Since it was already installed, we agreed it would be far easier just to replace the drawer front. So, the manager of the appliance department came to our home personally with a replacement drawer front and replaced it for us.
While the story ends well and the refrigerator has been in use for several weeks now and we love it, had we known that LG was the kind of company that has no interest in customer service and their management has the guts to say "let the buyer beware" instead of resolving a problem, we would probably have purchased another brand. For those of you thinking about LG, think twice. And if you do purchase one, you may want to think about a warranty from an independent company, as you may otherwise have to experience LG's lack of customer service!

Samsung RF4287HARS 28 cu. ft. 4-Door French Door Refrigerator - Stainless Steel Review

So far the fridge works well, has tons of capacity, flexible shelving systems.
This unit is a tad shorter than others in this size class. It needs only 68.5" of clearance for the portion of the unit behind the hinges. There is a plastic cord holder/dust cover on the back left top of the ice box. This was a cover for a recessed area that looks like where the water connects to the ice maker. I had to remove it to fit under the 68.5" face frame I had. This leaves about 1/4" top clearance at the face frame of the upper cabinet (of course 2" above top when you get past the face frame). I did cover the recessed area with packing tape to keep dust out.
The touch screen is a little finicky about where you touch. To switch ice types or turn ice off, you actually don't touch the screen rather the top curved area of the ice/water portal - not very clear in manual, luckily there one one obscure picture that showed the correct spot.
The middle "flex" drawer looks very promising.
Will update this over time.
Update: 06/17/10
I did see a better picture about turning ice off - better that my initial review. Ice maker has a somewhat different and slightly louder "ice drop" sound. The ice making frequency could be faster, but only time will tell if it keeps up with summer demand. I did have to tweak the alignment of the upper doors - could not be simpler!!!

G.E. PFSS5PYJSS PFSS5PYJSS French Door Refrigerator Review

This model is as close to the one we bought that I can find on Amazon. Ours is a GE Profile PFSS2 with filtered water and built in icemaker. It's stainless steel and matches everything else on this mode. The adjustable shelves are what makes this a great fridge. You decide how much space between shelve both inside and on the doors. So that you can make small condiment shelves and then have lots of room for big bottles. Under on of the shelves is a rack which holds twelve cans of soda, just like the ones in the market; it's angled so they flow forward as you pull each can out. All the shelves are on wheels and pull out, making it easy to find what your looking for.
There are lights placed all around the inside of the fridge so there are no dark spots where the light is blocked by a 2 liter bottle or a casserole dish. The bins are mostly see through so that you can find what you want without having to open them. There's one shelf that splits in half allowing you to put tall bottles on the shelf below without having to shift shelves around.
Only two complaints: 1) the filtered water is great if your right handed but is impossible to use left-handed (just a bunch of right handed bigots)
2) the off-switch for the in freezer ice-maker is located behind the bin that holds the ice and is awkward to get to; don't think they expect you to use it much
All in all we are quite pleased with the visual effect of having most of what you want right at eye level.
Zeb Kantrowitz

GE Profile : PFSF6PKXBB 25.5 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator with Ice/Water - Black Review

GE Profile : PFSF6PKXBB 25.5 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator with Ice/Water - Black
Average Reviews:

Pros: The full width, but shallow produce/deli drawer is useful and good to have a selectable temp according to what's in it. We set the temp to Deli and keep sliced meats and cheese in it and its perfect for that, wide but shallow so everything is visible. That drawer complements the usual 2 produce drawers which are directly above. Door storage is nicely adjustable. The freezer has an upper drawer that works well for storage.
Cons: The icemaker kicks the ice into the tray with a real racket. Our old Amana made some noise this way, but this one wakes me up some nights. The ice thru the door will splash the drink onto the floor if there is already liquid in the glass (maybe other models do this too). The buttons on the door for controlling the fridge and thru-door functions aren't very good. The buttons are part of a smooth face, but the lighted phrases that indicate the mode are not buttons, the buttons are around the edges and aren't lit. Most folks try to press on the lighted phrases, which is more intuitive. For instance, to get ice thru the door, you have to first look and see if the symbol above "cubed", "crushed", or "water", is lit, and if your desired selection is not lit, you have to press the button marked "ice & water", WHICH IS NOT LIT, until your desired selection is lit. I know how to work it now, but no one new figures it out without help.
I should caveat these cons with the fact that we chose this fridge without trying it out first. We went to a Sears scratch and dent store, where we were able to save $1000 off list, but the models weren't powered up for demo. If I could have tried them powered up and found another model with more intuitive door controls I might have chosen that. But overall it is a very good fridge, especially at the price we paid.
