KitchenAid KFCS22EVMS Architect II Series Energy Star Counter Depth French Door Review

KitchenAid KFCS22EVMS Architect II Series Energy Star Counter Depth French Door
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I want to hug this thing every morning! But I won't- that way lies madness. Besides, I don't think DH would like it. Why am I so happy? Because..I had a 25 year old, noisy Sub Zero for which I could no longer find parts. It had to go. Unfortunately, we had remodeled the kitchen around it. So I thought I was stuck with another Sub Zero. Why do I say "stuck"? Aren't Sub Zeros the very best? Well, call me a rube , but to me it was essentially a shinier, shallower, taller, louder version of my cheap Sears fridge in the basement. Not to mention that a new Sub Zero costs over $8000, for Pete's sake!
What to do? Enter the KitchenAid counter depth French door fridge. Fantastic. For about $6000 less I have a fridge that takes up less space but has more room inside.(It's magic!) The counter depth fits perfectly in the space where the Sub Zero loomed. The KitchenAid is pretty and quiet and well organized on the inside. Now I have a new, quiet, (did I mention quiet?) fridge with more room inside. It has an interior filtered water dispenser, an excellent deli drawer,(wide and shallow so you can see everything) see -thru veggie bins, and even a neat little scoop in the ice bin. The doors open and close independently of one another. I also like having two smaller doors instead of one heavy door. The water filter is within easy reach in the top of the fridge.
The freezer is also well organized. The ice bin can be rolled out of the way to make use of the space beneath. The freezer also has bins which might , for example, keep melted Popsicle goo from leaking all over the freezer and the floor and the ceiling beneath. Just in case.
AND my cabinet maker is going to put a new shelf in the space that opened up over the KitchenAid. (The Sub Zero was 12" inches taller). I finally have a place to store those huge trays my mother gave me for Christmas. More fridge taking up less space for less money- what's not to like?

Amana : AFI2538AEB 24.9 Cu. Ft. Refrigerator - Black Review

Amana : AFI2538AEB 24.9 Cu. Ft. Refrigerator - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our Amana Side-by-Side stopped cooling late in the afternoon the day before Thanksgiving. We bought ice and stuffed the fridge, then rushed to shop before the stores closed. This is not the way I like to shop. I like to do research first. But because we must keep Insulin chilled but not frozen we didn't have the luxury of research time and Internet shopping.
I knew I wanted this style because I love bottom freezers, it is easy to see items in the back, and it is energy efficient.
None of the stores we were able to get to before closing time carried this model. I found that most brands had freezer drawers that were extremely difficult to open. Some I couldn't open at all.
I was worried about buying American because I knew Whirlpool had bought the companies and we once had a Whirlpool that was nothing but trouble. Our son bought a bottom-freezer Amana after the company had been purchased by Whirlpool. He said he was pleased with it, had had no problems, and was told when he bought it that Amana still makes the machine; Whirlpool only makes the visible exterior.
I have recommended Amana to family and friends so the only question was could I open the drawer? Yes! The floor model was tight; the one on my new fridge is easier to open even when fully loaded. The freezer has 2 upper drawers for easy access to the foods you use most frequently. They slide.
The big surprise was inside the refrigerator section. The left side has 6 special holders for soda or beer cans. This saves a lot of shelf space. The right door has a special place for 2 gallons of milk. Shelves are adjustable. There are 2 crisper drawers and a deli drawer. To use the deli drawer you have to open both doors. The lights are bright. The water filter is up front so it's easy to replace. It's large so it should last quite a while. The fridge will tell you when the filter needs to be replaced. There's an alarm to warn you the doors aren't closed. It went off as we were loading the fridge. It's loud enough to hear across the room but it doesn't blast you out of the house.
This model provides ice and water through the door. You can select water only, cubes only, or both together. The temperature control is also on the outside. There is a child lock to prevent children and large dogs from playing with the water dispenser. (Yes, dogs sometimes press their noses to it. We have a friend who has a curious Great Dane.)
This refrigerator is quiet! Amana is not known for quiet refrigerators, only good ones. Insulation is great. It hardly runs but maintains temperature perfectly.
What you will miss are an egg container and a large ice container. I miss the crushed ice my previous Amana had. And I believe a side-by-side freezer holds more than this drawer. Both my Amanas are 25 cubic feet total but I don't know the freezer measurements.
The exterior does not show fingerprints!

Our Electrolux French Door refrigerator with water and ice on the door is OK but not worth the price. The ice maker is a constant problem and we've had it replaced twice and it is still a noisy pain in the neck. I wish we had shopped other brands before we bought this one but we were of the impression that this was the 'best'.
For the money we spent ($3,300.00) I believe we could have done better. Shop carefully before you buy this product!

although the fridge works fine, it is the most inefficient space design imaginable. There are 3 adjustable door shelves, and I had to remove on in order to keep a 1 gallon jug of milk in it. Three veg. drawers, but to get at the middle one, you have to open both doors. I d go back to a side by side in a heart beat.

Samsung RF217ACPN 20 cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator - Stainless Platinum Review

Samsung RF217ACPN 20 cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator - Stainless Platinum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me say that I'm a huge fan of most Samsung products. I have owned multiple Samsung cell phones, TVs, monitors, computers, and other products. I have heard the praises on Samsung washers and dryers. All of that led me to buy the RF217ACRS (or RF217ACPN) refrigerator. Its size was perfect for the kitchen I had and at first glance I thought it was a good appliance.
Within two weeks of having it delivered the refrigerator and freezer was intermittent. The freezer temperatures varied greatly and I ended up with a freezer of melted ice cream and thawed out products. I used manual thermometers in both the refrigerator and freezer and quickly learned that it hardly ever kept the temperatures that were displaying on its digital readings. The manual thermometers were placed at different areas and it still never matched. The freezer would be at -25 degrees one moment and +30 degrees the next, all the while the digital gauge on the unit said it was -2 or 0. Frost was constantly melting and refreezing.
Thankfully, the store agreed to pick up this unit and deliver a replacement. Thinking I got a lemon, I just got another Samsung RF217ACRS. Within another month, the replacement unit (completely new, although same model) was doing the same thing. The store agreed to replace it again and I then quickly switched brands. After ditching Samsung, I'm happy to say that I'm thrilled. I now have a refrigerator that cools and a freezer that freezes, but it is NOT a Samsung. It's amazing how happy a customer can be when an appliance does what it is supposed to.
Now, even if you decide to buy the RF217ACRS (or RF217ACPN) after reading about the problems I had, let me tell you about the features of the refrigerator. The stainless steel finish is nice and the EZ Open Freezer handle is a great touch. However, you will not get many features on the inside. While the shelving units are adjustable, they do not adjust enough. You can only adjust them a couple of inches in a few directions. Most of the door shelves turn out to be too small to even use unless you just omit one of the shelves to increase the height of the others. Other units offer shelves with much more adjustable heights to them. After you look at other brands, you will see that Samsung missed the mark on designing the interior of this unit.
You can fit a gallon of milk in the doors, but don't even try to fit a one gallon pitcher of tea or something similar on the shelves. The noise level is a bit higher than I expected. It is not quiet, but it is manageable. The lighting is too dim. I know they are using LED lights to save energy, but there needs to be more light. When opening the freezer door you often spill ice into the bottom of the freezer or worse, your kitchen floor. The ice maker comes down too far into the ice bucket causing it to knock cubes off when opening/closing the door.
At the end of the day, I was never thrilled about the abilities or features of this Samsung refrigerator. When major problems surfaced, that just put the nails in the coffin. I was completely dissatisfied with this model and Samsung's customer service (I did call them after the second malfunction). I cannot recommend this model and likely cannot recommend any Samsung refrigerator.

Maytag : MFF2558VEW Refrigerator Review

Maytag : MFF2558VEW Refrigerator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
TL;DR: Whirlpool/Maytag service is TERRIBLE. If you buy their products - buy a backup fridge! You'll need it!
Let me be clear on this up front - the fridge is nice, lots of space. This is NOT at all a review of the seller (it was purchased brick and mortar store).
The service is another story. Customer service is courteous BUT getting anything done is a HUGE pain in the rear. My wife and I bought this fridge from Home Depot in January this year (2011). We got it home let it sit for 24 hours before plugging it in. One week later we noticed ice cream not being very firm, few days later everything was thawed out.
I contacted Maytag service and began the nightmare of service:
First service appointment. Sears repair comes out to troubleshoot the fridge - tells me the compressor is bad and needs to be replaced. The earliest they can get me in is 7 DAYS later, mind you I'm already 3 DAYS without a fridge.
Second service appointment. Return of Sears repairman. The compressor is replaced, dye dryer is installed (this is an important detail - it allows other techs to use a UV light to spot any leaks). Fridge runs great, nice and cold, case closed....
Not so fast!
About 3 months go by and the same problem crops up - we start to notice in the freezer. I contact Maytag service right away. I explain to them the situation, I ask for a replacement fridge at this point. They outright refuse to replace it and insist on having ANOTHER tech come out to troubleshoot the problem so they can get a "second opinion". The service rep conferences me in with the local Direct Maytag store. I specifically tell them to bring a UV light that the fridge has a dye dryer on it; to which I'm told "they'll make a note of it."
Third service appointment. Direct Maytag service shows up 4 days later. I kid you not, the tech comes ONLY WITH A MULTIMETER, no tools other than screwdriver!!! WTF?!?! Tells me that the compressor is bad - no kidding. < sarcasm >I couldn't tell this by the fact my fridge was warmer than the outside air temp!< /sarcasm > He tells me they have to send someone else with the tools to look at it!
I'm going on 4 days of having to take off work now - because they'll always be there between 8am - 5pm!
Fourth service appointment. Direct Maytag shows up again - this time within 2 days. Again, no UV light. Tech says he found a leak (not sure how) in the original work that Sears did - he would like to "patch it". He refills the fridge with coolant (05/18/11).
Come yesterday (06/06/11) the fridge is warm again. I called Maytag AGAIN. Spoke with someone who told me they can't authorize a replacement fridge until they talk to Direct Maytag (who called them and spoke with them on the last repair in May - while I stood there).
Be warned... Maytag was a acquired by Whirlpool!
I would recommend staying away from any of the following companies.. they all use the same parts and service teams:
Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Brastemp, Consul, Bauknecht and Gladiator
I can imagine that the service would be right on par with this nightmare!

Electrolux EI26SS55GS 25.9 cu. ft. Side by Side Refrigerator w/IQ-Touch - Stainless Steel Review

Electrolux EI26SS55GS 25.9 cu. ft. Side by Side Refrigerator w/IQ-Touch - Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

I actually have the EI26SS65GS which only differs slightly with the touch controls.
The high point of this refrigerator that makes it stand out from the crowd is that it is fully constructed in stainless steel while the others just have stainless steel cladding in the front but not on the sides.
This makes for a handsome refrigerator since this is not a counter depth model so the sides show.
Both freezer and refrigerator interior has ample storage. The interior lights have a nice effect of being initally dim at first and then fully brightens up.
A good point is the vacation mode you can set that saves electricity by not turning on the defrosting cycle when you are away.
My only grievance is the the design of the ice dispenser which delivers the ice (both cubes and crushed) which such force and intensity that the ice is spilled all over the floor and a clean up is always necessary. My 4 year old kid is so afraid to use it.
The delivery men do not install the water dispenser hose so I had to do it myself and it was somewhat of an effort threading it properly. I mis-threaded the first hose and had to buy an aftermarket replacement at $7. It seems that the original hose is hard to find item.
For the $2,500 we paid for it, we expected that the Ice dispenser flaw would have been discoverd and remedied before production.
FYI: unit made in Mexico.

This is our second LG fridge. The first was purchased in 2007. We started having problems right away...seemed like the repair person was here every 6 months. Finally, the last problem was insurmountable and after 2 weeks of "camping" with ice chests, LG at long last replaced the fridge with this model. We were thrilled and the fridge arrived 4-18-2011. On June 1st, it just died. Turned out to be a defective main circuit board. Part ordered. Next day, we were informed that the part was out of stock, not in for 4 weeks. Hmmm, part out of stock....what does that tell you? An all too common problem? It has now been 7 days and we are waiting to see what LG will do for us. They do not plan to reimburse us for all the ice we've purchased or for some of the food that has gone bad. Totally unacceptable time to keep a customer in limbo. Buyer beware!

Whirlpool : GI7FVCXWB 27 cu. ft. Bottom Mount Refrigerator - Black Review

Whirlpool : GI7FVCXWB 27 cu. ft. Bottom Mount Refrigerator - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've had our black Whirlpool Gold Latitude (model GI7FVCXWB) refrigerator for three months. We purchased it in February of 2010. We give this refrigerator a five star rating.
This refrigerator is everything we wanted. We love that we no longer need measuring cups for adding water to a recipe. The door shelves are wide enough for gallon bottles. Both the refrigerator and freezer are huge. We had a second freezer because the top freezer on our previous refrigerator was so small. I have unplugged the second freezer because it is no longer needed.
The ability of the ice maker to dispense cubes or crushed ice is great. Although I've seen some complaints regarding the noise level of the ice maker, it is no louder than any other refrigerator ice maker. The noise level does not draw your attention to it nor does it drown out conversations or cause any other distress.
My only complaint is with the Owner's Manual. The refrigerator has a door ajar alarm. Unfortunately, the Owner's Manual does not provide good instructions for turning the alarm on. Once, I figure out how to set the door ajar alarm, we will have no concerns with our black Whirlpool Gold Latitude.

Whirlpool Gold GX5FHDXVQ 36 24.8 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator - White Review

Whirlpool Gold GX5FHDXVQ 36 24.8 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator - White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got the GX5SHDXV model, similar to the one shown, about a week ago. It was originally $1298 at Lowes, but the floor model had paint scratches, so they marked it down to $1k. Lowes delivered it (an adventure in itself) but I installed it and set it up. So far so good, it's quiet, makes lots of ice quickly, and has the Energy Star qualification that should save $$ on my electric bill.
There is only one gallon storage shelf in the door; I wrote Whirlpool to send me another to replace the can dispenser shelf that I won't use.
The refrigerator drawers slide nicely, as does the freezer compartment drawer.
The paint finish is very good, once I cleaned off all the tape residue from Lowes (why do they do that?) I used auto detailing spray to make it shine.

LG LFX28978ST LFX28978ST French Door Refrigerator Review

LG LFX28978ST LFX28978ST French Door Refrigerator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This comment is about LG's poor customer service and the unprofessional attitude of their management. We recently purchased a new LG stainless steel french door refrigerator, model LFX28978ST. We found our best deal at Home Depot and they delivered it promptly. It came well packed with blue plastic covering all of the stainless surfaces for protection. We inspected the unit to make sure it was in good shape, but left the plastic in place. We had to complete installing our new kitchen floor before installing our new LG, so we had the delivery folks set the unit out of the traffic pattern where it remained untouched for 9 days.
Once the flooring was finished, we installed the refrigerator into a custom cabinet where it fit perfectly. Once in place and connected to water and power, we removed the plastic on the doors as it cooled down so we could start putting things into it. It was after removing the plastic that we noticed a slight but very sharp diagonal dent about 8 inches long on the lower freezer drawer. Since we watched the unpacking and moving of the unit into our home the week before, this dent clearly occurred at the factory. We immediately called Home Depot, and they asked that we call LG since the unit is new.
We called LG, and to make a long story short, they said they would not do anything. Their position was that we have only 7 days (this was day 9) to report any damage. There is nothing on any paperwork that says this, but they said that this is their policy. We asked to speak with a manager, who said the same thing and added "let the buyer beware." This conversation lasted probably 15 minutes, but to no avail.
We then contacted Home Depot again, and they said they would take care of it for us. Home Depot is great! In fact, they were willing to replace the entire refrigerator. Since it was already installed, we agreed it would be far easier just to replace the drawer front. So, the manager of the appliance department came to our home personally with a replacement drawer front and replaced it for us.
While the story ends well and the refrigerator has been in use for several weeks now and we love it, had we known that LG was the kind of company that has no interest in customer service and their management has the guts to say "let the buyer beware" instead of resolving a problem, we would probably have purchased another brand. For those of you thinking about LG, think twice. And if you do purchase one, you may want to think about a warranty from an independent company, as you may otherwise have to experience LG's lack of customer service!

G.E. PFSS5PYJSS PFSS5PYJSS French Door Refrigerator Review

G.E. PFSS5PYJSS PFSS5PYJSS French Door Refrigerator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This model is as close to the one we bought that I can find on Amazon. Ours is a GE Profile PFSS2 with filtered water and built in icemaker. It's stainless steel and matches everything else on this mode. The adjustable shelves are what makes this a great fridge. You decide how much space between shelve both inside and on the doors. So that you can make small condiment shelves and then have lots of room for big bottles. Under on of the shelves is a rack which holds twelve cans of soda, just like the ones in the market; it's angled so they flow forward as you pull each can out. All the shelves are on wheels and pull out, making it easy to find what your looking for.
There are lights placed all around the inside of the fridge so there are no dark spots where the light is blocked by a 2 liter bottle or a casserole dish. The bins are mostly see through so that you can find what you want without having to open them. There's one shelf that splits in half allowing you to put tall bottles on the shelf below without having to shift shelves around.
Only two complaints: 1) the filtered water is great if your right handed but is impossible to use left-handed (just a bunch of right handed bigots)
2) the off-switch for the in freezer ice-maker is located behind the bin that holds the ice and is awkward to get to; don't think they expect you to use it much
All in all we are quite pleased with the visual effect of having most of what you want right at eye level.
Zeb Kantrowitz

GE Profile : PFSF6PKXBB 25.5 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator with Ice/Water - Black Review

GE Profile : PFSF6PKXBB 25.5 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator with Ice/Water - Black
Average Reviews:

Pros: The full width, but shallow produce/deli drawer is useful and good to have a selectable temp according to what's in it. We set the temp to Deli and keep sliced meats and cheese in it and its perfect for that, wide but shallow so everything is visible. That drawer complements the usual 2 produce drawers which are directly above. Door storage is nicely adjustable. The freezer has an upper drawer that works well for storage.
Cons: The icemaker kicks the ice into the tray with a real racket. Our old Amana made some noise this way, but this one wakes me up some nights. The ice thru the door will splash the drink onto the floor if there is already liquid in the glass (maybe other models do this too). The buttons on the door for controlling the fridge and thru-door functions aren't very good. The buttons are part of a smooth face, but the lighted phrases that indicate the mode are not buttons, the buttons are around the edges and aren't lit. Most folks try to press on the lighted phrases, which is more intuitive. For instance, to get ice thru the door, you have to first look and see if the symbol above "cubed", "crushed", or "water", is lit, and if your desired selection is not lit, you have to press the button marked "ice & water", WHICH IS NOT LIT, until your desired selection is lit. I know how to work it now, but no one new figures it out without help.
I should caveat these cons with the fact that we chose this fridge without trying it out first. We went to a Sears scratch and dent store, where we were able to save $1000 off list, but the models weren't powered up for demo. If I could have tried them powered up and found another model with more intuitive door controls I might have chosen that. But overall it is a very good fridge, especially at the price we paid.
