KitchenAid KFCS22EVMS Architect II Series Energy Star Counter Depth French Door Review

I want to hug this thing every morning! But I won't- that way lies madness. Besides, I don't think DH would like it. Why am I so happy? Because..I had a 25 year old, noisy Sub Zero for which I could no longer find parts. It had to go. Unfortunately, we had remodeled the kitchen around it. So I thought I was stuck with another Sub Zero. Why do I say "stuck"? Aren't Sub Zeros the very best? Well, call me a rube , but to me it was essentially a shinier, shallower, taller, louder version of my cheap Sears fridge in the basement. Not to mention that a new Sub Zero costs over $8000, for Pete's sake!
What to do? Enter the KitchenAid counter depth French door fridge. Fantastic. For about $6000 less I have a fridge that takes up less space but has more room inside.(It's magic!) The counter depth fits perfectly in the space where the Sub Zero loomed. The KitchenAid is pretty and quiet and well organized on the inside. Now I have a new, quiet, (did I mention quiet?) fridge with more room inside. It has an interior filtered water dispenser, an excellent deli drawer,(wide and shallow so you can see everything) see -thru veggie bins, and even a neat little scoop in the ice bin. The doors open and close independently of one another. I also like having two smaller doors instead of one heavy door. The water filter is within easy reach in the top of the fridge.
The freezer is also well organized. The ice bin can be rolled out of the way to make use of the space beneath. The freezer also has bins which might , for example, keep melted Popsicle goo from leaking all over the freezer and the floor and the ceiling beneath. Just in case.
AND my cabinet maker is going to put a new shelf in the space that opened up over the KitchenAid. (The Sub Zero was 12" inches taller). I finally have a place to store those huge trays my mother gave me for Christmas. More fridge taking up less space for less money- what's not to like?

Fisher & Paykel : E522BRXU Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator (Right Hinge) Review

Fisher and Paykel : E522BRXU Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator (Right Hinge)

I bought my house, and found that the previous owners had done their own kitchen remodel which left a really strange size cutout for the fridge. It took me weeks to find this one which (as far as I can tell) is the only counter depth and narrow refrigerator. Anyway, it is a good fridge. No complaints. The fridge is cool looking, but the only reason that I can think someone would buy this one is for size. If you aren't restricted by size, I would look at a wider fridge.
Good things to know... There is an inline water filter (works good, easy to change), ice maker doesn't take up too much room, the fridge is counter depth (they don't advertise it as such but you can tell by the dimensions and the back is flat). The inside is small but the fridge doesn't look freakishly small. Oh, the ice maker is temperamental; it doesn't bother me but if you love ice this could be a problem.
Almost no one carries these; if you need to "see" it I found a Samsung at the big box retailers that is about the same size. If more than two people live in your house, or you like to buy big soda bottles, etc., maybe take a peek at something with similar dimensions before you buy.

A refrigerator is a major purchase, but I had limitations in terms of space, especially height-wise and needed a counter depth model. Well, if you read my review of the Bosch refrigerator, you will learn that I returned it--twice. The first time, the interior had a crack, so it went back; the second, in excellent condition, just was too, too noisy. I was going out of my mind and contemplated going to a hotel--that is how noisy it was. It went back. Something was wrong with it, but I had it with Bosch and its AWFUL door alarm--going off and off and off...but I already wrote that review. Forget Bosch refrigerators and forget buying a major appliance at Lowe's--at least Lowe's in NYC.
After extensive, and I mean extensive research, I found this particular KitchenAid model. I bought it from an appliance dealer in nearby NJ, and was told it would be quiet. Is it? Yes, well, no refrigerator is dead quiet, but this one comes close. It has its moments when I can hear it from another room, but it is not overpowering. The noise quiets down in about twenty minutes, so I am satisfied. Very nice features, many shelves, so many that I removed two, and the stainless is of superior quality. All in all, I am pleased. I checked the reviews on the Internet--most were very positive. I say again, my main concern was the noise, so I do recommend this particular model. I got the one in total stainless steel, as the the other model says stainless steel, but has a black cabinet. Side by side doors always need to be leveled and made even, so that is something I must point out, otherwise I totally recomnmend this model of KitchenAid refrigerators. And, thankfully, it has no alarm!

I purchased this fridge because I had a tiny kitchen. On a cu ft basis it is one of the most expensive fridges you can buy. I have redone 3 kitchens in the past 5 years, and have spent about $30,000 on appliances. I have never seen such poor quality. The MAIN problem is that the refrigerator slopes--the bottom is 2" further away from the wall than the top even after I adjust the legs as far into the cavity as possible--it looks like a s___ show. I called Mark Goldman (Summit customer service) to help solving the problem. First he claimed this was how the fridge was designed--the door should close slowly. I said it doesn't--it SLAMS shut. Then clearly demonstrating the design story was invalid, Mark told me I could build up my floor with shims! I said that was ridiculous for $1000 fridge (it's $300 extra for the icemaker). He said I needed proof there was a problem, so I sent an email with a photo of the slanted fridge and a photo of a 36" level on the floor to show it was level (i tried to paste photos here, but can't). Under pressure from the retailer, Summit sent a service rep. The service rep agreed the floor was level and the legs were into the cavity, so there was nothing he could do to fix the problem--that there was clearly a manufacturing or design flaw. When Summit received this information, they said since it wasn't a MANUFACTURING flaw (it was the design flaw--so ALL fridges will have the same problem), they weren't required to do anything about it. So I'm living with the problem.
As an aside, the rest of the quality is no better. the produce drawer is plastic and doesn't slide on the guides well, so soon it will break no matter how careful I am.

I actually have the EI26SS65GS which only differs slightly with the touch controls.
The high point of this refrigerator that makes it stand out from the crowd is that it is fully constructed in stainless steel while the others just have stainless steel cladding in the front but not on the sides.
This makes for a handsome refrigerator since this is not a counter depth model so the sides show.
Both freezer and refrigerator interior has ample storage. The interior lights have a nice effect of being initally dim at first and then fully brightens up.
A good point is the vacation mode you can set that saves electricity by not turning on the defrosting cycle when you are away.
My only grievance is the the design of the ice dispenser which delivers the ice (both cubes and crushed) which such force and intensity that the ice is spilled all over the floor and a clean up is always necessary. My 4 year old kid is so afraid to use it.
The delivery men do not install the water dispenser hose so I had to do it myself and it was somewhat of an effort threading it properly. I mis-threaded the first hose and had to buy an aftermarket replacement at $7. It seems that the original hose is hard to find item.
For the $2,500 we paid for it, we expected that the Ice dispenser flaw would have been discoverd and remedied before production.
FYI: unit made in Mexico.

Average Reviews:

The delivery people dropped this off, and we unplugged it almost immediately due to a high pitched, headache-inducing noise when the compressor comes on (verified by visitors to our home). The service person from our vendor came the next day, agreed upon the noise and thought there was an issue with the compressor. He had our salesperson replace our refrigerator with another new one. The new one had the same problem, so we contacted Bosch directly and they sent their representatives out. They could not find an issue with it. Our vendor's service person came out again and called his Bosch representative, who noted a similar problem with a prior model and suggested replacing a board. The board was replaced, but the problem persists. Bosch and our service person had no alternative solutions and we are now returning the refrigerator altogether.
We purchased several other Bosch appliances at the same time (dishwasher, stove, washer, dryer) and found them all to be great; sturdy and quiet. We are extremely disappointed and unsure what we will end up buying. The only other Bosch refrigerators available to us are in the same series (we have 300, 500 and 800 appear to be the same except for more features) so we are afraid they will have the same problem and are looking at other manufacturers.

Summit refrigerators are awful! Man, do I wish I had done more research before I bought one. There are dozens of complaints out there about these units.
I waited a full year before posting this - ever hoping the unit would correct itself or I'd finally get some customer service return calls from Summit.
My Summit refrigerator makes a LOUD nonstop crackling noise EVERY time the refrigerator generator (what cools the food) comes on. It's LOUD.
I contacted Summit immediately and they acted surprised that my refrigerator was loud (HOW can that be when there are literally dozens of complaints online about this refrigerator and the lack of customer service from Summit??!!!).
First they said I had to find my own repair person, so I did ... but they didn't use him. They set up an appointment for a repair guy to come fix my refrigerator, but he was a straight NO SHOW 3 times in a row!!! I had to take off work 3 days to wait for a repair guy who never showed nor called. When I called him, each time the guy said he had forgotten the appointment!!! 3 times?????
When I tried to get Summit to arrange for a different repair person (I even had 3 new recommendations PLUS my original recommendation for them), they refused (RUDELY TOO!) and insisted that I had to work with this guy. I tried a 4th time with their repair person and again NO SHOW! Now 4 vacation days GONE!
I called Ken Cullins (Summit CEO) and Paul Storch (VP of Customer Service ... here's their #: 718.893.3900 x93 for Paul) and they were dismissive and rude.
The fridge is too cold, is WAY TOO LOUD - it wakes me up at night!!!!!!, ... and the worst part is the Summit knows how bad their products are, continues to sell them, and do not respond to customer complaints or efforts to fix the problems.

This new refrigerator is awesome. It's super quiet, super efficient, and just super awesome. When the compressor kicks on, my lights down dim unlike my old one. You can fit a beer glass in the water dispenser area. The only thing i hate is the ice drop, if you get crushed it will sometimes come out (theres no "chute extender" if you will. The display panel is very neat and clean. Note, it can take up to 24 hours for it to produce ice. I think mine took 8 hours after hookup to make it.

Overall we are satisfied with the value of this side-by-side fridge, but there are some drawbacks. PROS: great space and solid construction; real stainless steel doors that magnets will stick to; radiused edges on doors make fridge look smaller than it actually is; LED light on water/ice dispenser is lovely. CONS: loud water pump; no way to lock down roller feet, so fridge tends to roll out of place; water/ice dispenser controller has momentary response delay, which means it's far too easy to end up spilling water or ice on the floor; replacement water filters very expensive and there is no way to bypass the filter with a shunt or cap.

We bought this because it was the only counter-depth fridge we could find that had crushed ice; if I were to do it again I would forgo the ice crusher and get a different refrigerator...
Pros: Given the fact that it is a shallow depth design, and its ice maker/dispenser is very large, the thing has a surprising storage capacity. It has one shelf in the door big enough to hold a gallon or two of milk. There are three (three!) crispers--if you like crispers this is the fridge for you. The freezer is narrow but well thought out.
The store display and the salesman were both enthusiastic about the fact that you can slide an 18" pizza into this fridge and still close the door, so if you store a lot of large pizzas you should consider this fridge I suppose.
It is a very quiet fridge and judging from the utility bill it seems to be extremely efficient.
Cons: There are a lot. In order of importance:
The ice dispenser is so poorly designed it is almost surreal. It dispenses these moon-shaped cubes, and it will also chew these up and dispense them as crushed ice. Getting ice out of it is quite an adventure: you push your cup against this plastic trigger thing and then ice EXPLODES out of it. It might not do it right away--there might be a pause--maybe even a long pause--you will hear this rumbling noise--then like a cubic yard of ice will BLAST out of the fridge, fill your cup instantaneously, the proceed to dump ice all over the floor.
I am not kidding. The ice eruptions are so violent you eventually develop an involuntary wince whenever you touch the ice dispenser and you have to psych yourself up and take some deep breaths before you put yourself through the ice agony and violence followed by the inevitable sweeping lots of ice up and putting it in the sink.
The water line to the ice maker is a little plastic tube that snakes up along the back of the refrigerator and enters the freezer through a little fitting. The water line is prone to freeze up, which stops the ice maker from working. This seems to be a common problem with these judging from some internet searches. It is not difficult to pull the fridge out, shut the water off, pull the water line out and knock the ice out of it--but many people will not know how to do that and will require a service call to put it right. Very poor design.
The three (three!) crispers take up about 40% of the fridge space. Maybe that's okay with you, maybe not.
All the plastic bits, drawers etc inside the refrigerator are very flimsy. The plastic door over the ice maker was broken when the fridge was installed, apparently done in by the mere strain of being delivered. The drawers are thin plastic, don't slide well, feel cheap. This refrigerator cost a LOT of money, they can't make a decent plastic drawer for it?
All in all I don't think this appliance is worth the money; I suspect there are better values out there. But it will hold a remarkable amount of food for its size and it does seem to be very energy efficient.

We purchased this refrigerator several months ago when the one in our new Coop broke down. We did not shop around, but my husband and I both felt that "you really can't go wrong with GE" as we have purchased GE refrigerators and stoves before when we upgraded other properties we owned. Boy were we wrong. As soon as the refrigeator arrived we noticed that the quality was poor. Where do I begin???? there is an awkward seam down the back of the fridge that is not even centered and looks as though someone glued two pieces together. The clean steel scratches easily and if you look at at the top of the refrigerator you will note that the steel was applied as a sheet that covers only the front of the door and does not extend all the way to the edges (poor workmanship). The water/ice dispenser sticks some times. The glass inside the refrigerator is terrible quality and scratches easily. The same goes for the door compartments. Really, the quality is so bad that it makes me angry to think that we paid $1,750 total including taxes and delivery. I would have gladly paid more for a quality product. Again, we have owned other GE refrigerators that did not have these problems.

I bought a stainless steel GE bottom freezer refrigerator five years ago when I renovated my kitchen. It looked so nice and shiny and it worked fine until last year. Then the top section up and died.
I got on the GE website and scheduled a service appointment. The repairman finally came at 5:30 p.m. after I was home waiting for him all day long, but he did come on the day he said he would.
He inspected the fridge, told me the thermostat regulator for the top section had gone kaput, and installed a new one. I asked him how long that part was guaranteed for and he said five years.
I almost hit the roof. My previous fridge had been a top-freezer GE which lasted 17 years and was still in good working order when I tossed it. For $1300, I told the repairman, I expect everything in that fridge to last 100 years minimum and not a day less.
Anyway, the fridge worked fine again until last week, when I noticed it wasn't cold enough. Back to the GE website to make another service appointment. This time they sent the same guy but at least he came early.
He opened the fridge, and voila! The fan had up and died.
He replaced the fan, put everything back together nicely, and handed me a bill for $246.15. Labor: $194.99. Tax: $17.49. Fan: $2.98. I shelled out over two hundred bucks to replace a piece of plastic that cost $2.98.
GE, you've been warned. If anything else in that fridge conks out before 2025, I'm tossing the whole thing out and buying a KitchenAid.

Not only does GE make the most worthless piece of cr@p appliances, they also have the all-time worst customer service.
Have gone through two of these refrigerators. The first one shook and squeaked like crazy every time we opened its door. The repair tech's solution was to "level" the fridge. They "leveled" the fridge over 10 times in 18 months. The first fridge also frequently made a very loud, random clicking noise. The noise could be heard over the TV, movies, etc... It was extraordinarily disturbing, especially when the family is trying to have a quiet dinner or even watch a movie in the living room. After going through hell (about 20-30 hours on the phone and over a dozen useless, failed service calls) GE finally replaced the fridge (only because the developer of our new house forced the local sales rep to replace it; GE customer service basically told us to F-off). And the new fridge makes an even louder clicking sound! WTF?!
Avoid ALL GE products like the plague. They are a worthless company that doesn't give a rat's a55 about customer service and cares even less about taking thousands of your hard-earned dollars in exchange for a useless product that is designed to fail miserably.
