About a month after I got married last year, our hideous, harvest gold, dilapidated refrigerator graciously went off to be with the Lord. We couldn't really afford a replacement, but I was secretly doing backflips that we could get something nice, spacious and not so hideous. While saving up funds to buy a new fridge and living out of a mini dorm fridge for 3 months, we researched various models. We definitely wanted the stainless steel variety and wanted a bottom drawer freezer... and this LG did not disappoint.
The drawer slides open and closed easily with just one hand and tends to hold quite a bit of weight with the stuff we cram in there. The side door is generously spaced to accommodate 2 liter bottles, salad dressing or just about anything else. Our frozen stuff stays frozen and the cold stuff stays cold.
My criticisms are few, but I do have some:
Frost/ice accumulates on the left side of the drawer occasionally, so sometimes some drops off on the floor.
The left door swings closed on its own - you can easily prop open the right door to load in something big and heavy, but the left door will not stay open for you.
The shelf adjustment is not very elegant - you have to take the shelves out and stick them back in at a higher tier. Some competing models had a hand crank which was easier to use.
The top of the vegetable compartments is covered with 1 giant piece of glass. It is hard to get out and very awkward to clean in a sink if something spills. This would have made a lot more sense if it were segmented into 2 or 3 sections for easier handling.
While I know it's par for the course with stainless appliances, it's very irritating to not be able to use magnets to hold something important on the front of the fridge. It's steel, not aluminum. It makes no sense. One day, I'd like it if some manufacturer would come out w/ a stainless model that was upgraded to use magnets!
The ice-maker is a tad tiny, so it gets jammed with ice frequently, causing us to take the basket out and fiddle w/ the ice to get it to move down the chute.
The digital panel for selecting crushed or cubed ice is too complex... you have to press buttons a few times to get it to 'take' - this could have been executed better.
The lighting is the best I've ever seen in a fridge - no harsh bulb in your face - very easily-distributed light throughout. So far, it's one of the nicest refrigerators I've ever owned.

My wife and I bought this French door, counter depth Electrolux in late April of this year (2010.) I have to say, I am not happy with this refrigerator at all.
First, it is occasionally very noisy and sounds like popcorn is popping inside. I think this is related to the icemaker, which also doesn't dispense very well at all.
Second, the door design on this unit is terrible. There is a moving weatherseal on the right-hand door that keeps it from just naturally closing. You have to exert a fair amount of force to close it. With the icemaker on the left door (and after years of side-by-side units) the right hand door is the natural one to use to access the fridge. Because of the hinged seal strip, it often doesn't quite close. Why they didn't put the seal on the left door is beyond me. It also doesn't indicate that it is ajar and the icemaker actually makes noise like it is working, but it doesn't engage and dispense ice.
Third and finally, it is extremely easy to cause the freezer baskets to jump out of their mounts and jam up.
I would highly not recommend this unit.

Samsung RF217ACRS 20 cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator - White Pearl Review

Samsung RF217ACRS 20 cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator - White Pearl
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me say that I'm a huge fan of most Samsung products. I have owned multiple Samsung cell phones, TVs, monitors, computers, and other products. I have heard the praises on Samsung washers and dryers. All of that led me to buy the RF217ACRS (or RF217ACPN) refrigerator. Its size was perfect for the kitchen I had and at first glance I thought it was a good appliance.
Within two weeks of having it delivered the refrigerator and freezer was intermittent. The freezer temperatures varied greatly and I ended up with a freezer of melted ice cream and thawed out products. I used manual thermometers in both the refrigerator and freezer and quickly learned that it hardly ever kept the temperatures that were displaying on its digital readings. The manual thermometers were placed at different areas and it still never matched. The freezer would be at -25 degrees one moment and +30 degrees the next, all the while the digital gauge on the unit said it was -2 or 0. Frost was constantly melting and refreezing.
Thankfully, the store agreed to pick up this unit and deliver a replacement. Thinking I got a lemon, I just got another Samsung RF217ACRS. Within another month, the replacement unit (completely new, although same model) was doing the same thing. The store agreed to replace it again and I then quickly switched brands. After ditching Samsung, I'm happy to say that I'm thrilled. I now have a refrigerator that cools and a freezer that freezes, but it is NOT a Samsung. It's amazing how happy a customer can be when an appliance does what it is supposed to.
Now, even if you decide to buy the RF217ACRS (or RF217ACPN) after reading about the problems I had, let me tell you about the features of the refrigerator. The stainless steel finish is nice and the EZ Open Freezer handle is a great touch. However, you will not get many features on the inside. While the shelving units are adjustable, they do not adjust enough. You can only adjust them a couple of inches in a few directions. Most of the door shelves turn out to be too small to even use unless you just omit one of the shelves to increase the height of the others. Other units offer shelves with much more adjustable heights to them. After you look at other brands, you will see that Samsung missed the mark on designing the interior of this unit.
You can fit a gallon of milk in the doors, but don't even try to fit a one gallon pitcher of tea or something similar on the shelves. The noise level is a bit higher than I expected. It is not quiet, but it is manageable. The lighting is too dim. I know they are using LED lights to save energy, but there needs to be more light. When opening the freezer door you often spill ice into the bottom of the freezer or worse, your kitchen floor. The ice maker comes down too far into the ice bucket causing it to knock cubes off when opening/closing the door.
At the end of the day, I was never thrilled about the abilities or features of this Samsung refrigerator. When major problems surfaced, that just put the nails in the coffin. I was completely dissatisfied with this model and Samsung's customer service (I did call them after the second malfunction). I cannot recommend this model and likely cannot recommend any Samsung refrigerator.

KitchenAid KFCS22EVMS Architect II Series Energy Star Counter Depth French Door Review

KitchenAid KFCS22EVMS Architect II Series Energy Star Counter Depth French Door
Average Reviews:

I want to hug this thing every morning! But I won't- that way lies madness. Besides, I don't think DH would like it. Why am I so happy? Because..I had a 25 year old, noisy Sub Zero for which I could no longer find parts. It had to go. Unfortunately, we had remodeled the kitchen around it. So I thought I was stuck with another Sub Zero. Why do I say "stuck"? Aren't Sub Zeros the very best? Well, call me a rube , but to me it was essentially a shinier, shallower, taller, louder version of my cheap Sears fridge in the basement. Not to mention that a new Sub Zero costs over $8000, for Pete's sake!
What to do? Enter the KitchenAid counter depth French door fridge. Fantastic. For about $6000 less I have a fridge that takes up less space but has more room inside.(It's magic!) The counter depth fits perfectly in the space where the Sub Zero loomed. The KitchenAid is pretty and quiet and well organized on the inside. Now I have a new, quiet, (did I mention quiet?) fridge with more room inside. It has an interior filtered water dispenser, an excellent deli drawer,(wide and shallow so you can see everything) see -thru veggie bins, and even a neat little scoop in the ice bin. The doors open and close independently of one another. I also like having two smaller doors instead of one heavy door. The water filter is within easy reach in the top of the fridge.
The freezer is also well organized. The ice bin can be rolled out of the way to make use of the space beneath. The freezer also has bins which might , for example, keep melted Popsicle goo from leaking all over the freezer and the floor and the ceiling beneath. Just in case.
AND my cabinet maker is going to put a new shelf in the space that opened up over the KitchenAid. (The Sub Zero was 12" inches taller). I finally have a place to store those huge trays my mother gave me for Christmas. More fridge taking up less space for less money- what's not to like?

I should have known better! My old Kenmore died and I bought this noxious import because it a) fit in a 32" nook; b) I didn't want an ice maker; and c) it looked great. ("Sleek European styling") I didn't know that it has a DC compressor and emits a constant whine (or bass hum, buzz or hum, depending on the cycle). At its worst it is like having a truck idling in your kitchen. But you always hear it. The noise kicks in even if you haven't opened the door in an hour, and cycles last from 30 minutes to what seems like hours. The sales rep I finally reached via the escalation dept. confirmed that it's not a question of decibels, but of frequency. As for noise complaints I found after it was too late, he reluctantly admitted that, yes, there are some people who find the noise really disturbing. Or as the repairman told me, "I know it's loud, but that's normal for this thing. That's just the way they make them these days," he said, and showed me how the high speed compressor was attached to the back of the machine with a few screws and with absolutely nothing to soften the sharp whine it makes most of the time. My Kenmore rumbled a bit but it never, ever made that awful shrill piercing relentless whine. I can hear it in my office or bathroom adjacent to the kitchen but not upstairs or in the shower. I can't even imagine what this thing would be like in an apartment!
These new compressors are a known issue, which is something I wish I'd found out before I bought this thing from Albert Lee appliances in Seattle. You'll find complaints about GE, Frigidaire, Kenmore and others. But at 17.3 cf, most of them are half the price of this sleek European mediocrity.
Not everyone is sensitive to noise. If you're oblivious to tv test patterns, dentists drills, high tension wires or a speaker when you leave the stereo on, you might think it was pricey but okay. At least it's prettier than the white molded plastic you usually see.
But if you think that hearing your fridge when you're in another room at twice the price, either buy a mid-priced fridge with the same or more features, or get a Sub Zero for $3,000, and steer clear of Fisher & Paykel products. This is by far the worst appliance I have ever owned.

Amana : AFI2538AEB 24.9 Cu. Ft. Refrigerator - Black Review

Amana : AFI2538AEB 24.9 Cu. Ft. Refrigerator - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our Amana Side-by-Side stopped cooling late in the afternoon the day before Thanksgiving. We bought ice and stuffed the fridge, then rushed to shop before the stores closed. This is not the way I like to shop. I like to do research first. But because we must keep Insulin chilled but not frozen we didn't have the luxury of research time and Internet shopping.
I knew I wanted this style because I love bottom freezers, it is easy to see items in the back, and it is energy efficient.
None of the stores we were able to get to before closing time carried this model. I found that most brands had freezer drawers that were extremely difficult to open. Some I couldn't open at all.
I was worried about buying American because I knew Whirlpool had bought the companies and we once had a Whirlpool that was nothing but trouble. Our son bought a bottom-freezer Amana after the company had been purchased by Whirlpool. He said he was pleased with it, had had no problems, and was told when he bought it that Amana still makes the machine; Whirlpool only makes the visible exterior.
I have recommended Amana to family and friends so the only question was could I open the drawer? Yes! The floor model was tight; the one on my new fridge is easier to open even when fully loaded. The freezer has 2 upper drawers for easy access to the foods you use most frequently. They slide.
The big surprise was inside the refrigerator section. The left side has 6 special holders for soda or beer cans. This saves a lot of shelf space. The right door has a special place for 2 gallons of milk. Shelves are adjustable. There are 2 crisper drawers and a deli drawer. To use the deli drawer you have to open both doors. The lights are bright. The water filter is up front so it's easy to replace. It's large so it should last quite a while. The fridge will tell you when the filter needs to be replaced. There's an alarm to warn you the doors aren't closed. It went off as we were loading the fridge. It's loud enough to hear across the room but it doesn't blast you out of the house.
This model provides ice and water through the door. You can select water only, cubes only, or both together. The temperature control is also on the outside. There is a child lock to prevent children and large dogs from playing with the water dispenser. (Yes, dogs sometimes press their noses to it. We have a friend who has a curious Great Dane.)
This refrigerator is quiet! Amana is not known for quiet refrigerators, only good ones. Insulation is great. It hardly runs but maintains temperature perfectly.
What you will miss are an egg container and a large ice container. I miss the crushed ice my previous Amana had. And I believe a side-by-side freezer holds more than this drawer. Both my Amanas are 25 cubic feet total but I don't know the freezer measurements.
The exterior does not show fingerprints!

Fisher & Paykel : E522BRXU Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator (Right Hinge) Review

Fisher and Paykel : E522BRXU Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator (Right Hinge)
Average Reviews:

I bought my house, and found that the previous owners had done their own kitchen remodel which left a really strange size cutout for the fridge. It took me weeks to find this one which (as far as I can tell) is the only counter depth and narrow refrigerator. Anyway, it is a good fridge. No complaints. The fridge is cool looking, but the only reason that I can think someone would buy this one is for size. If you aren't restricted by size, I would look at a wider fridge.
Good things to know... There is an inline water filter (works good, easy to change), ice maker doesn't take up too much room, the fridge is counter depth (they don't advertise it as such but you can tell by the dimensions and the back is flat). The inside is small but the fridge doesn't look freakishly small. Oh, the ice maker is temperamental; it doesn't bother me but if you love ice this could be a problem.
Almost no one carries these; if you need to "see" it I found a Samsung at the big box retailers that is about the same size. If more than two people live in your house, or you like to buy big soda bottles, etc., maybe take a peek at something with similar dimensions before you buy.

Our Electrolux French Door refrigerator with water and ice on the door is OK but not worth the price. The ice maker is a constant problem and we've had it replaced twice and it is still a noisy pain in the neck. I wish we had shopped other brands before we bought this one but we were of the impression that this was the 'best'.
For the money we spent ($3,300.00) I believe we could have done better. Shop carefully before you buy this product!

KitchenAid : KBFS25EVBL Refrigerator Review

KitchenAid : KBFS25EVBL Refrigerator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased this refrigerator from a local appliance store in October 2010 for $1700.
It is very large and because of the black color, I was a bit worried that it would dominate the kitchen but I'm used to it now and with my black and white tile floor and dark soapstone counters I find that it blends in nicely. So far we find that it is very quiet and efficient with a nice arrangement of customizable shelves for storage. I tend to use one crisper for vegetables and salad ingredients and the other crisper for storing tubs of miso, cream cheese, butter and so forth.
I like that the gallon storage compartments in the door have a removable grey liner that you can take out and wash individually when spills occur.
The large deli tray at the bottom of the fridge is handy but you need to open both doors to pull it out -- not a problem -- just something to be aware of. I usually store apples on one side and meat on the other side of the deli tray.
The right hand side door closes easily with just its own weight but the left hand door has the center seal strip and if you close it AFTER you close the right hand door and if you don't use just a little bit of extra force, it doesn't close all the way. I've accidentally left the door slightly open on a number of occasions. That's why the door alarm comes in handy -- it will beep to let you know that the door isn't shut properly. I wish that it beeped sooner because conceivably you could get your lunch out of the fridge and rush off to work before the door alarm activates and then your fridge would be all day with the door slightly open. This hasn't happened to us as far as I know as there is usually someone around in our household to notice the door alarm is going off. Over time I'm sure it will become automatic for me to just close the left hand door with a bit more force. The temp low setting is also nice --- one one occasion when I had done a lot of cooking, the hot food warmed up the refrigerator and caused the temp alarm to activate. It took us a while to figure out where the alarm was coming from and once I realized what it was, I hit the Max Cool button to help restore the temperature to the proper level.
I like that the controls are in the front of the fridge and also the light bulbs are easy to change. The light is a regular appliance bulb but since it's only on when the doors are open, it doesn't matter that it's not a low energy bulb.
Our contractor hooked up the water supply to a reverse osmosis filter in our basement and I believe he bypassed the filter in the refrigerator. So far the water dispenser works fine, it is tucked away near the hinges of the left hand side door --- the ice maker in the bottom freezer also works well and we always have a big old supply of ice --- far more than we could ever use even in the summer.
The freezer drawer is very roomy but once again you need to be very mindful about shutting it--- it has a self closing mechanism but one needs to give it a generous push to ensure good closure.
I like the shiny black doors --- I've read that the surface scratches easily and so have resolved not to clutter up the doors with fridge magnets. I don't notice that the doors get particularly marked up and the few fingerprints that have shown up on it wipe off easily. One advantage of the shiny doors is that you can see your reflection in them so it makes you think twice about getting out that snack when you can see how wide your hips look!
We find there is more than enough room in the fridge for the two adults and one part time adult living in our household. I haven't really had the fridge long enough to need to clean it or for problems to develop but if I do notice any problems I will come back and update this review.

Maytag : MFF2558VEW Refrigerator Review

Maytag : MFF2558VEW Refrigerator
Average Reviews:

TL;DR: Whirlpool/Maytag service is TERRIBLE. If you buy their products - buy a backup fridge! You'll need it!
Let me be clear on this up front - the fridge is nice, lots of space. This is NOT at all a review of the seller (it was purchased brick and mortar store).
The service is another story. Customer service is courteous BUT getting anything done is a HUGE pain in the rear. My wife and I bought this fridge from Home Depot in January this year (2011). We got it home let it sit for 24 hours before plugging it in. One week later we noticed ice cream not being very firm, few days later everything was thawed out.
I contacted Maytag service and began the nightmare of service:
First service appointment. Sears repair comes out to troubleshoot the fridge - tells me the compressor is bad and needs to be replaced. The earliest they can get me in is 7 DAYS later, mind you I'm already 3 DAYS without a fridge.
Second service appointment. Return of Sears repairman. The compressor is replaced, dye dryer is installed (this is an important detail - it allows other techs to use a UV light to spot any leaks). Fridge runs great, nice and cold, case closed....
Not so fast!
About 3 months go by and the same problem crops up - we start to notice in the freezer. I contact Maytag service right away. I explain to them the situation, I ask for a replacement fridge at this point. They outright refuse to replace it and insist on having ANOTHER tech come out to troubleshoot the problem so they can get a "second opinion". The service rep conferences me in with the local Direct Maytag store. I specifically tell them to bring a UV light that the fridge has a dye dryer on it; to which I'm told "they'll make a note of it."
Third service appointment. Direct Maytag service shows up 4 days later. I kid you not, the tech comes ONLY WITH A MULTIMETER, no tools other than screwdriver!!! WTF?!?! Tells me that the compressor is bad - no kidding. < sarcasm >I couldn't tell this by the fact my fridge was warmer than the outside air temp!< /sarcasm > He tells me they have to send someone else with the tools to look at it!
I'm going on 4 days of having to take off work now - because they'll always be there between 8am - 5pm!
Fourth service appointment. Direct Maytag shows up again - this time within 2 days. Again, no UV light. Tech says he found a leak (not sure how) in the original work that Sears did - he would like to "patch it". He refills the fridge with coolant (05/18/11).
Come yesterday (06/06/11) the fridge is warm again. I called Maytag AGAIN. Spoke with someone who told me they can't authorize a replacement fridge until they talk to Direct Maytag (who called them and spoke with them on the last repair in May - while I stood there).
Be warned... Maytag was a acquired by Whirlpool!
I would recommend staying away from any of the following companies.. they all use the same parts and service teams:
Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Brastemp, Consul, Bauknecht and Gladiator
I can imagine that the service would be right on par with this nightmare!

Electrolux EI26SS55GS 25.9 cu. ft. Side by Side Refrigerator w/IQ-Touch - Stainless Steel Review

Average Reviews:

I actually have the EI26SS65GS which only differs slightly with the touch controls.
The high point of this refrigerator that makes it stand out from the crowd is that it is fully constructed in stainless steel while the others just have stainless steel cladding in the front but not on the sides.
This makes for a handsome refrigerator since this is not a counter depth model so the sides show.
Both freezer and refrigerator interior has ample storage. The interior lights have a nice effect of being initally dim at first and then fully brightens up.
A good point is the vacation mode you can set that saves electricity by not turning on the defrosting cycle when you are away.
My only grievance is the the design of the ice dispenser which delivers the ice (both cubes and crushed) which such force and intensity that the ice is spilled all over the floor and a clean up is always necessary. My 4 year old kid is so afraid to use it.
The delivery men do not install the water dispenser hose so I had to do it myself and it was somewhat of an effort threading it properly. I mis-threaded the first hose and had to buy an aftermarket replacement at $7. It seems that the original hose is hard to find item.
For the $2,500 we paid for it, we expected that the Ice dispenser flaw would have been discoverd and remedied before production.
FYI: unit made in Mexico.

LG LFC25776ST 36 25.0 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator - Stainless Steel Review

This is our second LG fridge. The first was purchased in 2007. We started having problems right away...seemed like the repair person was here every 6 months. Finally, the last problem was insurmountable and after 2 weeks of "camping" with ice chests, LG at long last replaced the fridge with this model. We were thrilled and the fridge arrived 4-18-2011. On June 1st, it just died. Turned out to be a defective main circuit board. Part ordered. Next day, we were informed that the part was out of stock, not in for 4 weeks. Hmmm, part out of stock....what does that tell you? An all too common problem? It has now been 7 days and we are waiting to see what LG will do for us. They do not plan to reimburse us for all the ice we've purchased or for some of the food that has gone bad. Totally unacceptable time to keep a customer in limbo. Buyer beware!

Fridge works great, but I found out that you can turn it off with your belly (Im 190 @ 6 feet) when reaching for things you might place on top of the fridge.
The buttons on the ice/water dispenser can turn your condenser off, when pressed at the same time, setting your temps to 0Fc. When that happens your fridge doesn't work and stops producing cold.
Lucky I noticed this before all my food went bad. I called the 800 service number and it was fast and told me the buttons to press to fix this. My temps went up 10 degrees before I fixed it since there is no mention of this in the product literature.

Maytag Ice2O Series MFI2269VEM 22.0 cu. ft. French-Door Refrigerator - Stainless Steel Review

Maytag Ice2O Series MFI2269VEM 22.0 cu. ft. French-Door Refrigerator - Stainless Steel

This model is similar to one we purchased two years ago. We had problems with water leaking from the door from the start, but an independant repairman was able to fix that with teflon tape. Maytag told us to just flush the system again and again. Now the fridge runs, but does not cool. The repairman says it will be $700 to fix, but that no Maytag is worth that. He says it will be nothing but trouble and we're better off buying a Kitchenaide and accepting our losses. Over 2000 down the tubes! But at least were free of the repair bills.

This seemed to be a good refrigerator until it stopped running after less than three weeks. I'm waiting on repair - Whirlpool couldn't schedule service for 72 hours but the dealer says he'll have someone out tomorrow.
