Anchor Hocking Glass Kitchen Food Storage Containers, Set Of 8 Review

Anchor Hocking Glass Kitchen Food Storage Containers, Set Of 8

I have a set of two cup glass containers I purchased for my husband to pack leftovers in for work. I have been disappointed in their performance thus far. The glass edges have chipped from normal use and the lids are starting to crack and in some cases tear across the top. I have used these about 6 months. On the other hand I have had pyrex bowls with plastic lids for years and they are still going strong. No chipping and no cracking or tearing of lids! I would recommend Pyrex over Anchor it is worth the extra money.

Libbey 6-1/2-Ounce Small Bowls with Plastic Lids, 8-Piece Set Review

Libbey 6-1/2-Ounce Small Bowls with Plastic Lids, 8-Piece Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for something reasonably priced that would allow me to store (in the fridge) and serve baby food. Because I do not like to microwave in plastic, something glass and with lids was ideal. I have not had the problems with the lids seeming cheap or leaky at all and the bowls nest nicely so they take up very little space. I freeze food in cubes and then use these dishes to warm and serve or keep food fresh in the fridge. Ideal!

Pyrex 6004023 6-Piece Glass Rectangular Storage Set with Blue Lids Review

Pyrex 6004023 6-Piece Glass Rectangular Storage Set with Blue Lids
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We were pleased to find that these containers can be used for some types of COOKING, not just for storage.
We like the convenience of containers that can be used for baking or microwaving, and then covered and used to store any leftovers, without scooping into different containers.
These containers do not have handles on the sides, so they can be tricky to grasp with potholders when removing from a microwave or regular oven. On the other hand, the lack of handles does allow these rectangular containers to use space efficiently in the refrigerator.
The paper labels/inserts indicate these Pyrex glass containers are oven safe (in a regular oven, preheated), and microwave safe, freezer safe, and dishwasher safe. However, like most Pyrex, they are NOT broiler safe, and should not be used on stove-top burners. There is also a warning against use in a toaster oven.

The plastic lids should not be used in a regular oven, of course. I assume we should unseal and loosen the lid, before we put a container in the microwave. It is BPA free, according to the fine print on the paper label.
The plastic lids go on easily, and fit OK, but are not perfectly tight. I think if I turned a container upside down, the contents would leak around the edges of the lid. I assume that if the lids are put in a dishwasher, they should only be on the top rack, if at all. When I looked at reviews for some other Pyrex storage containers, a few reviewers recommended hand washing plastic lids; they thought the lids might keep their shape better if hand washed.
We have not yet put these containers through dozens of uses, so I cannot yet say how durable they are. I will add a "comment" to this review in the future, if there are problems later on.
We have owned other Pyrex glassware for years. These containers seem just slightly thinner than the Pyrex "Storage Deluxe" containers which are extra thick.
Several years ago, we bought Pyrex "Storage Deluxe" glass containers (with the vent tabs on the lids); they have endured years of frequent use with no chips. However, we eventually had to replace some of those vented plastic lids. We were able to buy replacement lids from the manufacturer's world kitchen web site and/or phone number; I assume that replacement lids for this non-vented type of storage container can also be obtained. We have heard that Pyrex outlet stores may also have the lids. We have not been able to find replacement lids on this site yet.
On the paper labels/inserts, there are lots of warnings, but the print seems small (or am I just getting old and farsighted?).

The labels/inserts say: "Failure to follow these instructions can cause immediate or later breakage ..." I will mention some of the warnings and limitations here, so shoppers will know whether the limitations fit with how they plan to use the containers: "AVOID SEVERE HOT TO COLD TEMPERATURE CHANGES." "DO NOT add liquid to hot dish..." Hmmm, sounds like basting is out. The label advises: "Add a small amount of liquid to the dish prior to baking foods that release liquids while baking."
DO NOT "place hot dish ... in a sink, immerse in water or place on cold or wet surfaces." ... "Allow glass to cool before soaking."
More warnings: When using the container in the microwave, do not use a microwave "BROWNER", and "DO NOT use PYREX glassware items ... to hold or support popcorn bags, microwave convenience foods with special browning wrappers, etc."
For use in a regular oven, the label implies that we should PREHEAT the oven BEFORE putting a Pyrex glass container in the oven. I have heard that some ovens use extra high heat during the preheat step -- higher than any regular baking temperature, but I don't know that with certainty. I'm guessing that the exposure to extra high heat during preheating, could cause damage to Pyrex glassware.
The containers' side walls are sloped outward at a slight angle. Thus the length and width at the bottom are somewhat smaller than the length and width around the top edge.

OXO Good Grips 10-Piece POP Container Set Review

OXO Good Grips 10-Piece POP Container Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overview:
I have purchased many of these storage containers, in various sizes. As with most OXO products, I have been extremely satisfied with them, and I would buy them again. More importantly, my wife appears to be equally impressed with her gift.
That being said, I don't think they would work as well for everyone, as they do for us. They are expensive, and they are not necessarily the best choice for a home with small children. As such, I will provide you with my observations, and leave it up to you to decide how they would fit into your personal lifestyle.
The pros:
They seal flawlessly, and with great ease. I believe they are the best product available for keeping the freshness in, and the bugs out. They stack nicely, and their clear siding permits easy identification of the contents within. Their rounded corners make pouring a breeze.
These containers come in a variety of sizes, and meet all of our kitchen dry-storage needs. They work for everything from baking goods, to cereals and crackers, to bread. Yes, the two largest container sizes can hold a normal-sized loaf of bread, and keep it fresh for much longer.
They have really helped organize the pantry, which looks great, and makes it much easier to evaluate how much of a product requires replentishment, prior to shopping.
The cons:
First, many of them (especially the larger sizes) are not packaged well for shipping, and they have arrived in broken condition. Fortunately, Amazon Customer Service has promptly replaced them, without delay. To me, the long-term convenience far outweighs the short-term frustration.
Second, we have not broken any of them after delivery, but we are also quite careful in their handling. I'm not sure how well they would do with small children, so be advised before you invest. I suspect a single drop on the hard kitchen floor would result in a damaged container, but I am not willing to test my hypothesis at this price.
Third, they are not dishwasher safe, except for the silicon sealing ring. For us, this has not been a major issue, but it may be a problem for others. Personally, we have found their non-pourous construction to be easy to clean, so we don't mind hand washing them.
Pre-purchase planning:
Be aware that for stacking purposes, the containers come in three shapes (from the top view): small-square shape, large-square shape, and rectangular shape. While you can sometimes mix them for stacking, in general, I find that it is best to stick to one shape (for a particular stack).
Also, be aware that you get more bang-for-the-buck with the larger sizes. The relationship between the price of the container and the volume of storage is indirect. In short, less storage costs you more money.
In general, I find the large-square shape and the rectangular shape to be the most beneficial. They permit easy access, and they allow the buyer more options regarding what to put in them. That being said, understand that the prepackaged sets tend to come with a lot of the small-square shaped containers.
The smallest sizes have limited functionality, but can be useful for storing raisons, small candies, etc. As for the spices mentioned by the manufacturer, spices usually come in a bottle. For those that don't, I believe there are better (and cheaper) products available.
Summary:
For those willing to deal with the shipping issues, the risk of future breakage, and the hand-washing, I think this is by far the best product on the market. With care, they will save you money in the long-run because: they keep things fresh, they keep the bugs out, and they make it easy to avoid the over-buying or the under-buying of groceries. They are a quality product, and they make the kitchen look great.
Whether you want to buy many of them or just a few, I generally recommend the larger sizes. They provide the best bang-for-the-buck, and permit greater flexibility. Specifically, I would start with a few of the large-square types to see if you like them as much as I do.
Thank you for those who posted before me. Much of what I have said consolidates what you mentioned before, and really helped with my purchasing decisions. For those of you still stuck in the decision-making process; good luck! I hope this helps out a little.

Pyrex 6021224 Storage 10-Piece Set, Clear with Blue Lids Review

Pyrex 6021224 Storage 10-Piece Set, Clear with Blue Lids
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This has to be one of the best deals around, even at twice the price, because it replaces so many other things, and is so durable.
The containers work nicely for food storage, but they also can be used for cooking. They go from freezer to oven or microwave, and are dishwasher safe as well. Pyrex is practically unbreakable. With normal use, this set could easily last a lifetime. At the current price, they actually cost less than plastic containers, which do not have either the durability or versatility.
If all that's not enough, consider the health benefits. Glass will not leech plasticiser into your food, and there's no dioxin to worry about when microwaving.
I don't usually rave about kitchen items, but after I recieved this set, I rushed back to order another. I'm getting rid of most of the plastics in my cabinets today!

Pyrex 1072164 Storage 18-Piece Round Set
Average Reviews:

After reading reviews, I decided to purchase this set. I got so tired of storing in plastic and having to switch to a different container to then reheat (TWO bowls to clean up). These are great for both purposes, the sizes fit my needs, I can see what's inside. Since my storage space is limited I nest 2 sets, and usually have the extra 2-cup in constant use. The lids are very tight; they'll loosen just a little with use. Easy cleanup [NO STAINING]. Buy these--you won't be sorry!

Arrow Plastic Mfg Co 00745 Blue Beverage Container 1.25 Gal. Review

Arrow Plastic Mfg Co 00745 Blue Beverage Container 1.25 Gal.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our family goes through gallons of juices and iced tea, and I found myself refilling plastic containers 4 and 5 times a day. I wanted to find a large enough container to hold enough for several days but I also didn't want to sacrifice refrigerator space. After reading a number of rave reviews about this container I decided to purchase this one for our home. I loved the size and sleek design, I even liked the generous sized cap on top which allows easy access for pouring in any type of powdered beverage mix. The depth was perfect for my refrigerator shelf and I was excited to try it out. After just one day I noticed several flaws. First of all, despite the positive reviews and to my disappointment...the spout drips. You have to be very careful to keep your glass under the spout for a few seconds after you release the lever because it will drip on the bottom of your fridge. And no matter how careful you may be, not everyone in our household has mastered this technique. Second, you have to open the top cap a bit so that you get a regular stream of liquid otherwise the flow slows down. And finally, once your beverage level reaches about 1/4 full, you have to tip the entire container to get a steady stream from the spout. Next time I will rely less on the reviews.

Rubbermaid 7J93 Produce Saver Square Food Storage Containers Set of 8 Review

Rubbermaid 7J93 Produce Saver Square Food Storage Containers Set of 8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally purchased these on a very cynical whim. My mom had tried the "bags" which failed miserably so when I ran across this set I really had very low hopes. Well, here are my results:
So far I've had the same blueberries in one of these containers for THREE WEEKS. I purchased and washed them on July 19th, the day before a dinner party, put them in a Produce Saver bowl and put them in the refrigerator. Some were eaten at the party, many weren't. Today is August 10th and I guess I'm going to have to break down and make muffins with them or something because they're as fresh and plump today as they were 3 weeks ago.
Grapes stay so fresh in the large container (I buy 2 big bags at a time now) that after a week even their stems are still green. The grapes themselves are crisp and cold.
My strawberries lasted for a week the last time before they were finally all eaten. Not sure how long they would hold up as they are pretty popular. I just wash them, drain them, de-stem them and pull out all of the already questionable berries, put them in a medium container (holds about 2 lbs of berries without stems), stuff them in the fridge and walk away. We are just able to reach in and snack on fresh berries whenever we want.
And a big one -- tomatoes. Already sliced or diced tomatoes are nas-tay after they've been refrigerated overnight. I have stored diced tomatoes in the small bowl for a week and a half and they were just as tasty as the day I diced them. Not at all soggy and grainy.
Currently I have one of these sets and an extra medium bowl. It's on my shopping list to get another set ;-) They've already saved me a fortune in fresh produce and I've only had them for about a month! My next experiment will be with bananas.... If my large bowl is ever empty long enough.

Rubbermaid's Produce Saver collection of food-storage containers helps extend the life of produce thanks to its tray and vent system. The vent in the lid allows oxygen to circulate around the produce, while the included tray helps keep the produce elevated about a 1/2 inch away from moisture. The collection also makes container and lid organization a breeze. Designed with space efficiency in mind, the lids and bases nest together so that they take up less room when stored in a cabinet or drawer, plus the lids snap to the bottom of the bases and to each other, which means no more searching around for the right-size lid. Even more, one lid can accommodate several different-size bases. The square shape of the containers allow for easy stacking, while super-clear bases provide better visibility of inside contents. The covered containers can be used in the refrigerator, freezer, or microwave, and clean up quickly by hand or in the dishwasher. This four-pack set includes two 2-cup containers, one 5-cup container, and one 14-cup container.
