ED - Extra Duty Reverse Osmosis Unit Review

ED - Extra Duty Reverse Osmosis Unit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got one of these units for Christmas from my wife. And after about 1.5 months of use we couldn't be happier. This unit reduced our PPM's from 600 to 80. Our Arrowhead bottled water came in at 150-ppm's. The water tastes great and the system works like a charm!
The permeate pump is definitely the ticket. The pressure coming out of the RO tap is excellent and the recharging of the system is very rapid. It does make a clicking or thumping sound when the permeate pump is recharging the system. I'd rather it was quiet, however after doing quite a bit of research I feel the permeate pump is the best overall solution to increasing the out-flowing water pressure, as well as, permitting the membrane to function optimally.
Note: I had some shipping damage to the unit, but the supplier included so many extra fittings and such that I was able to fix the damaged parts myself and get the system up and running without having to wait for parts to be sent.
Stop buying bottled water and get one of these units now! You will not be sorry. Seriously, you will wonder why you've been buying bottled water all this time. You'll never want to pay for bottled water again once you taste this water and realize it's now costing you a few penny's per gallon to produce.

GE SmartWater GXSTQ Inline Water Filter System Review

GE SmartWater GXSTQ Inline Water Filter System

Excellent product that was easy to install, once I figured out how and what I needed, which segues to my only gripe -- NO INSTRUCTIONS ARE INCLUDED!!!! Thank heavens for Home Depot. I took the filter to Home Depot and their helpful staff guided me to everything I needed (hose & coupling clamp kits -- would have been nice if these were included). The rest was a piece of cake. The parts weren't expensive either, about $5.00.

FM350CH DUPONT Deluxe Faucet Mount Filtration System (Chrome) Review

FM350CH DUPONT Deluxe Faucet Mount Filtration System (Chrome)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used Teledyne Water Pik and Pur faucet-mounted filters in the past. This filter is easy to install, and has a sturdy frame that connects securely to the faucet without leaks. It is aesthetically pleasing, although I am sure that other users may have different color preferences (another Dupont filter on the market offers different color cartridge covers in the same box). The electronic counter is unique, in that it displays gallons of water filtered, and doesn't just indicate when it's time to replace the filter. You have to be careful to connect the display module to the housing BEFORE you insert the water filter, otherwise it will not work correctly. If you unscrew the display after you have loaded the water filter cartridge, then you must remove the filter, screw on the display first, and then reinsert the water filter once again. The bottom line is that the water filter cartridge must be inserted after the display in order for the display to work properly. I also noticed that the counter actually measures the time the filter is in use, and indirectly calculates the gallons filtered by a predetermined formula. Therefore, if you have a low water pressure faucet like I do, the gallons that have been filtered will be overestimated. The display is not very clear if you are looking at it from an angle. The filtered water flows at a slow rate, but all filters have a slower filtered water rate, since the water must flow through the cartridge at a slow rate in order to have a good particle/chemical removal effect. The cartridge can be used to filter 200 gallons of water, and not just 100, like other filters on the market. It is therefore more economical than the competitors. Of course I have not performed any water testing to confirm that the filter remains efficacious for all those 200 gallons. That's what the manufacturer claims. This is the only faucet-mounted filter on the market that is a 4-stage filter. It contains Microban, that supposedly prevents the accumulation of bacteria within the filter. If there is a feature I wish this system had, that would be an automatic switch back to unfiltered water - that would prevent using the filter with hot water, something that can happen accidentally and destroy the filter (hot water destroys all activated carbon filters). I think that there are Culligan filters that have that automatic switch. This system is definitely worth it.

Permeate Pump With Clips Review

Permeate Pump With Clips
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use this with my Watts RO system. The permeate pump has John Guest type connections, which is easy for connecting tubes. The connector size is 1/4 inch. Since my Watts system uses 3/8 inch tubes for the filtered water, I also bought 1/4 to 3/8 adapters (which will be included if you buy the permeate pump from Watts' site directly). The Watts manifold system has two 3/8" outputs to fork the filtered water to tank and faucet. I had to end one of them and add a 3/8 tee as a fork after the permeate pump. While I am writing this, I think I could have instead used a 3/8x3/8x1/4 tee between the manifold and the pump (no need to end an output and also save an adapter).
RO systems rely on water pressure difference on the two sides of membrane: the lower the pressure difference, the more wasted water. The often cited 4:1 waste water ratio is for when the tank is empty. As the tank fills, the pressure difference is smaller and more wasted water is generated and longer time is needed to produce the same amount of filtered water. This is why people who tested the ratio at home found higher ratios than the published one. In reality the waste ratio may be even higher as the tank is rarely empty before the system resumes to work again. This pump separates the tank from the membrane, making the pressure on the tank side of the membrane always low. As explained above, this will greatly reduce the amount of waste water.
When pressure difference on a membrane is low, the rejection rate (percentage of contaminants rejected) is also low, resulting in more TDS (total dissolved solids) in the filtered water. So, this pump will also increase rejection rate. High pressure difference also makes it faster to fill the tank, and a 24 GPD (gallons-per-day) membrane may be enough for a system that needed 50 GPD. In addition, the hydraulic pressure of the pump will push more water into the tank, resulting in a higher tank pressure when filled than without the pump.
An RO system has a shutoff valve, which shuts off the water when the pressure difference is low and reopens when the pressure difference increases to a certain level. This stops the system from wasting too much water. When this pump is used, it may render the shutoff valve useless. This is true especially for manifold systems like the Watts because the shutoff valve is built into the manifold and cannot see the tank pressure after the permeate pump is installed. As a result, the input water is never shut off. In this situation, the pump will act like a pseudo-shutoff valve and will shut off the system when tank pressure reaches a high level. But when the tank pressure is reduced a little (say by drawing a small cup of water), it immediately resumes to work. This increases the chance of TDS creep: even when the system stops, the membrane still sits in water, and the TDS on the tap water side will gradually creep through the membrane into the filtered water side. The more frequently the tap water is "refreshed" (as in the above scenario), the more TDS creeps into tank. I alleviated this problem by adding an auto shutoff valve externally between the tank line and the input water line. I used a regular shutoff valve (which shuts off at 60% pressure), but a 90% valve probably is better (see the comment by Waterdrinker).
The pump will generate a click sound every few seconds when it is working. This is normal and the sound is nothing compared to the hissing noise from the air gap of the RO system.
Compared to not using the pump, I probably save 4-5 gallons water for each gallon of filtered water. We use about 3 gallons per day for cooking and drinking. So our annual saving is about 5000 gallons, or about 15-20 bucks a year.

This might be piling on, but we have an obligation to the community: this pitcher is junk. The lid will not stay on. Never mind trying to pour with it, just carrying it to the refrigerator without the lid falling off is a challenge. It should go without saying that Brita should be able to filter water. That's what the company does. The water is great. It will save us a bunch of money. It's the right thing to do for the environment. But come on, Brita. You're based in Oakland, CA. The filter itself is a great filter and I would recommend it to anyone hands down, but I would not purchase it from FilterWater.com. on Amazon. The filters took forever to arrive and once I got them, they were not packed well, one was broken, and the filters looked like they had been on the shelves for a decade or so. The wrapping on the filters was old and falling apart. I have also had difficulty getting a refund from this company and still have not received it yet, after several phone calls about it.

Brita Water Filtration System Kit: 1 Pitcher (Large Capacity) Plus 2 Fliters Review

Brita Water Filtration System Kit: 1 Pitcher (Large Capacity) Plus 2 Fliters
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just bought this package (pitcher+2 filters) and the first thing that struck me is its shape: stylish and elegant. As I began to use it (two adults and two older boys--we go through 1.5 gallons/day), I noticed how efficient and effortless it is: It fills easily, filters water quickly, and pours effortlessly, while keeping track of the filter via a digital progress bar located on the lid housing. Because of its shape, you can fill up even very small-diameter bottle openings quickly and easily.
Note: I've read several reviews on this and other Brita pitchers that snipe about the design of the lid/filter assembly, and that it can fall out....(?) I've tried to make that happen and have been unsuccessful. From my experience, you'd have to be pouring really aggressively with a full pitcher of water to make that happen, which doesn't make much sense when you consider that you'd be discharging water through the filler lid. If you've pushed the filter in with sufficient force to create a proper seal, then you've seated the lid/filter assembly with enough pressure to keep it from coming loose -- just pour normally!!!!
Now, as far as the economics go: Where I live a case of bottled spring water goes for $4-4.50/case. That breaks down to about $2.00/Gal of water. The Brita will make about 40 gallons of water for each $6.00 filter. Let's see: 40x $2/gal = $80.00 for 40 gallons of the bottled stuff vs. $6.00 for the same amount with the Brita......I'm thinkin' no-brainer here.

PUR CR-6000C 2-Stage Oval Water Pitcher with LED Indicator Review

PUR CR-6000C 2-Stage Oval Water Pitcher with LED Indicator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

The PUR CR-6000C 2 Stage Oval Water Pitcher with LED Indicator has some very strong positives that make it a good choice. However, it also has some weaknesses that will hopefully be addressed in a re-design. As long as you know what the weaknesses are, you should be able to get more use of the benefits of this product than some people have reported.
Pros:
+ Takes up a small amount of floor space
+ Great 2 stage filters leak less filter debris than other filters
+ It has an attractive look with a sleek body
+ The included indicator reminds you when to change filters
+ The price is very reasonable on an annual basis
Cons:
- The body isn't as solid as it could be, so use both hands to pick it up
- The filters seem to run out quickly
- Removing the cover takes some practice
The slim form factor has a smaller footprint and takes up less space, but it also puts more weight on the handle and the body every time you pick it up. So most of the complaints about cracking are due to the slim oval design, and not just the thickness of the pitcher. How do you compensate for that? Simply use your other hand to hold the front of the pitcher when you pick it up and relieve some of the pressure on the body and handle.
The other common complaint has to do with the design of the lid, which seems to make the pitcher difficult to fill. But after the first time, the lid opens much more easily. Simply put your thumb into the back tab of the lid an it will open easily. What's more, this model has the added benefit of having a nice seal when closed, so refrigerator odors won't get into your water. Just make sure to wait till your water has gone through the filter before putting it away, to avoid spilling.
Other than the obvious savings of cutting down on bottled water and the plastic waste that comes with it, the best feature of this pitcher has to be the filter. As a long-time Brita user, I got tired of the filter material ending up in my water. Not only does the two stage filter of this model screw in securely, it has less seepage of filter material. And of course, most importantly, the water tastes great. I can't comment on whether or not it removed more bacteria, because I didn't run any scientific tests. But the taste was definitely an improvement over other filters.
Now there is a larger dispenser that may be better for those with space in their fridge for it. Obviously you will have less breakage issues, but it takes up much more room. So it's a trade-off.
The flashing indicator on the top is meant to calculate how many refills you have gone through, and it will tell you when you have to change your filter. Even at $20 for a three pack, this system basically comes out to $60 a year for filters and the pitcher. Not bad, even if you had to replace the pitcher every year.
Overall, despite the warts this is a good product. If you don't have the room for the larger dispenser, or the faucet mount, then this will work for you. Just handle it with care.
Enjoy.

ZeroWater ZD-001 Filtration Pitcher with Electronic Tester, Filter Included Review

ZeroWater ZD-001 Filtration Pitcher with Electronic Tester, Filter Included
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most of us have had water filtration systems; either the under sink, mounts to faucet, or most commmonly, the filter-in-pitcher system. I saw this on a late night infomercial and was hooked. I will keep this review short and sweet:

Pluses: Nice attractive color, Spigot and valve ON the pitcher so no need to remove the pitcher from the fridge everytime you want some water, Zero-water meter is included (and can be stored IN the pitcher)
Minuses: Capacity could be greater. Filter is so massive that you go through the filtered water QUICKLY, especially if you have a larger family;
AND...the #1 drawback: This pitcher filters VERY SLOWLY. I am used to other Brita-type units and this is the slowest I've ever seen. Often when the pitcher is over half-full, and I fill the top reservoir, it doesn't drain completely after 3-4 HOURS. I have to keep a 1/2 gallon bottle in the refrigerator filled with cold filtered water since this filters so slowly.
So, great concept, water is fantastic, but pitcher filters way too slowly if you have a family larger than 2-3.

With the ZeroWater Pitcher you can get cleaner, fresher water without tapping into your plumbing line, using bulky water coolers, and wasting your money on expensive bottled water. Thanks to an innovative five-stage filtration process, the ZeroWater Pitcher offers more complete water filtration than ordinary carbon filters. And for convenience, this pitcher neatly stores right in your refrigerator door.
More Effective, Affordable, and Environmentally Friendly Than Other FiltersEven if you live in a municipality that cleans or treats water, water can pick up chemicals on its way from the treatment plant to your faucet, giving your tap water a metallic or chlorinated taste. Water that's purified with a ZeroWater Pitcher, however, tastes the way water should: crisp, clean, and fresh.
Tested and certified by the Water Quality Association and NSF International for removal of several minerals, ZeroWater is the only filtration system that fits the FDA definition of purified bottled water. And at a fraction of the cost of ordinary carbon filters.
The ZeroWater pitcher not only improves the taste of your tap water, it also helps to improve the environment. When you use the ZeroWater Pitcher, you'll reduce your use of plastic water bottles that clog up landfills and harm ecosystems. You'll also contribute to water conservation, because unlike reverse-osmosis systems, ZeroWater is gravity operated and doesn't waste electricity or water.
Five-Stage Filtration System for Water That Scores a Perfect "000"At the heart of every drop of water that's purified by a ZeroWater Pitcher is an independent, laboratory-calibrated water tester called a TDS meter. TDS stands for "Total Dissolved Solids" and represents the amount of dissolved substances that can negatively affect the way water tastes.
Unlike conventional gravity-fed or carbon water filters that remove only certain substances from your water, ZeroWater's patented Ion Exchange System with Five-Stage Technology provides the only filtered water to measure an absolute "000" on the TDS scale, which means that 100% of dissolved solids have been completely removed.
To help put this in perspective, meter readings for tap water average between 075 and 300. Conventionally filtered water measures between 030 and 500, and bottled water measures between 000 and 350. Unlike the alternatives, with ZeroWater you can be sure you'll get 100% great-tasting water.
Battery-Powered Meter Makes it Easy to Test Your WaterThe beauty of the ZeroWater Pitcher is that you don't have to accept purity claims at face value. Test your water yourself with the included meter and watch as the zeros come together to ensure that you're getting the best-tasting water possible.Powered by two easy-to-replace 1.5-volt button cell batteries (included), this meter also lets you know the status of your filter. For instance, if your meter reads "006," it's time to replace the filter.
Sleek, Contemporary Design for Ease of UseThis single-chamber pitcher features a sleek, patent-pending design that allows for easy storage in your refrigerator door. For added convenience, a handy dispenser at the bottom of the pitcher's handle allows you to access water without removing the pitcher from the fridge.

This item looks like it would work great... that is, if it had been installed prior to the installation of our very solid granite countertops. Since I suspect a lot of people might want to install these after their counter has already been installed, I fault the seller for not clarifying that this is not possible. Hence the three stars for a product that would probably work great otherwise.
